This Bergen walking tour is a compact introduction to Norway's fjord capital, built for guests who want the highlights without a long day on their feet. After meeting your guide, you begin at the Fish and Flower Market, the historic center of Bergen's fish trade and still the best place to see what locals eat, with free samples of items like whale and salmon caviar often available at the stalls.
From the market you walk into Bryggen, the old Hanseatic Wharf, where rows of gabled wooden pack houses line the harborfront. Bryggen was a Hanseatic League trading post from the middle of the 14th century until the middle of the 18th century, when German merchants processed and stored fish and goods here. Many of the wooden buildings standing today date back roughly 300 years and are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking the narrow alleyways between the storefronts is the closest you will get to medieval Bergen.
