This Akureyri shore excursion visits the stunning Godafoss waterfall, known as the Beauty, then gives you the choice of how to spend the rest of your time around Akureyri's old town.
After meeting your guide in Akureyri, you start the journey toward Lake Myvatn. About halfway there is a stop at Godafoss, one of Iceland's most photographed waterfalls. The name means waterfall of the gods, and your guide will explain the legend behind it. The falls are about 40 feet high and 100 feet wide.
From Godafoss you drive back toward Akureyri over the Vikurskard mountain pass, with views over Eyjafjordur and the town below. Akureyri is Iceland's second largest urban area outside the capital region and is considered the heart of North Iceland.
Your guide will offer a few options for how to spend your remaining time. You might explore Akureyri's old town on foot, or visit the Botanical Garden, among the northernmost botanical gardens in the world, first laid out as a public park in 1912 and formally established as a botanical garden in 1957. Another option is Laufas, a heritage turf house on the shore of Eyjafjordur mentioned in records soon after Iceland's Settlement era and home to parish priests since at least 1047, though the buildings standing today date mostly to the mid-19th century, with the church built in 1865. Some guests prefer the Christmas House, open year round, where you can browse local handicrafts and learn about Icelandic Christmas traditions.
At the end of your tour your guide returns you to your cruise ship in Akureyri.
