Your first stop is the Aladzha Rock Monastery, located about 15 miles from Varna inside the Golden Sands Nature Reserve. One of Bulgaria's most remarkable historical sites, the monastery was carved directly into a limestone cliff. Monks first used this site in the 4th century, and the main complex was expanded in the 13th century. You will see the former monk's cells and chapel, which still contain surviving frescoes and mural paintings.
From the monastery, you travel north along the Black Sea coast to the town of Balchik. The town is known for the Quiet Nest Palace, built between 1926 and 1937 for Queen Marie of Romania during the period of Romanian rule in the region. The palace complex includes residential villas, a chapel, a holy spring, a wine cellar, and an extensive botanical garden with one of the largest cactus collections in Europe. Your guide leads a walking tour of the most notable buildings and viewpoints overlooking the sea.
Following the palace visit, a three-course lunch is included. The meal consists of a salad, a main course of meat or fish, and dessert. Vegetarian options are available on request. Drinks are not included.
In the afternoon, you return to Varna to visit the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, one of Bulgaria's largest Orthodox cathedrals. Built in 1880 shortly after the Liberation from Ottoman rule, the cathedral contains religious art from the 19th century and is one of the defining landmarks of the city. Depending on timing, you may have a short period of free time in Varna before returning to the port.
