TOUR DESCRIPTION

Rosyth Shore Excursion -This full day tour visits St. Andrews, known as the home of golf and Scotland's oldest university. While you are there you visit the town's famous Cathedral and Castle plus enjoy some free time for lunch and shopping or self exploration.

After meeting your private guide at the pier you immediately depart for St. Andrews. You will enjoy a short stop to see the spectacular 19th century Forth Rail Bridge which is a remarkable cantilever structure that is regarded as an engineering marvel. The bridge was built to carry the two tracks of the North British Railway one and a half miles over the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry, at a height of 150 feet above the high tide.

St Andrews is a small town with a sizeable reputation that attracts visitors from all over the world. The ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews date back to the 13th century. Notable features include the dungeon and mines tunneled during the siege that followed the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546. These siege works are the finest of their kind in Europe. A fascinating exhibition in the visitor center brings the history of the castle and cathedral to life.

Next you visit the remains of St Andrew's Cathedral, the largest in Scotland. The precinct walls are particularly well preserved. The Cathedral Museum houses an outstanding collection of early and late medieval sculpture and other relics found on the site including the magnificent St Andrews Sarcophagus. St Rule's Tower is part of the first church of the Augustinian canons at St Andrews which was built in the early 12th century. There are splendid views from the top.

Following these visits is free time for lunch in a typical Scottish pub. You also enjoy some free time in the town to explore or make souvenir purchases.

Later this afternoon you return to the port via the coast passing charming towns such as Crail, Pittenweem and Anstruther.

Mobility: NO wheelchairs

Our first guide, Graeme Giles, met us as we stepped off the gangway.instantly identifiable thanks to his Kilt ensemble!  Very dashing! Admittedly his Scottish Brogue was pretty thick..he tried to slow down when talking..but we likely deciphered about half of what he said!  We drove straight to St Andrews from the Edinburgh Dock.  Did not see the Rail Road bridge.  Upon entering St Andrews we headed for a tour of the Cathedral.   Graeme was often stopped so a passerby could take a photo of him!  No question,,,he loved that!!   We visited the University of St Andrews, followed by lunch in the well known Grey Friars pub.  After lunch, shopping began in a number of golf shops that Graeme frequents.  Next he talked us onto the 18th green vantage point at the LPGA tournament.  Graeme seems to be known in St Andrewsand we received quick service where ever we went. There was a question if we could get into the R&A Museum due to the tournament,  but Graeme managed to secure our entrance.  The ride back to the ship went along country roads,,,,he was a master at avoiding traffic. As we arrived in good time back to the ship, Graeme asked us to come to the back of this van, we did, where he produced a bottle of Scotch Whiskey and teeny drinking cups. A good-by toast followed.  He presented the Barb and me two Scottish Terrierthe name of the tour company,,,pins.  Was a lovely day.and we managed to dodge all rain once we got out of Edinburgh.
