TOUR DESCRIPTION

Amsterdam City & Canal Cruise Shore Excursion

This full-day Amsterdam shore excursion is built for guests who want to see as much of the city as possible in a single private day: a walking tour, a canal cruise, a major museum visit, and free time.

Your guide meets you at the pier and drives into the city center to begin the morning on foot through Amsterdam's 17th century canal ring, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. This canal system was built during the Dutch Golden Age, when Amsterdam grew into one of the wealthiest trading cities in the world on the strength of the Dutch East India Company, and the grand merchant houses lining the canals still reflect that wealth today. Your guide points out architectural details as you walk, then gives you a short amount of free time near the Bloemenmarkt, the world's only floating flower market, to pick up a souvenir if you like.

Before lunch you take a private canal cruise through the same canal ring, gliding beneath historic bridges and past gabled houses for a different perspective on the city known as the Venice of the North. You then have free time for lunch on your own before the afternoon's main event.

In the afternoon your guide takes you to Museumplein for a visit to either the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum, whichever you prefer; let us know your choice when you book. The Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of the artist's paintings and letters anywhere in the world, while the Rijksmuseum spans Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages to the present, including major works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Your guide leads you through and provides commentary along the way. Afterward, if time allows, you have a bit of free time in the nearby Jordaan neighborhood, a former working class district now known for its narrow streets, courtyards, and independent shops, before returning to the pier.

Please note
  • Mobility: Due to uneven surfaces, steps, and walking distances, this itinerary is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs. Please contact us for alternative sightseeing options, including private driving tours that may better accommodate your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we choose between the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, or see both?
You choose one; both are offered as an option. Let your guide know your preference when you book, or your interest in art versus Dutch history more broadly, and they will take you to the museum that fits your group best.
What makes Amsterdam's canal ring a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
The 17th century canal ring was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010, recognized for its still largely intact Golden Age town planning and the wealth of historic architecture along its waterways.
Why is the Jordaan neighborhood worth the free time?
It was once a working class district built for craftsmen and laborers, and today it is known for its narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and independent boutiques and cafes, a change of pace from the busier canal ring.
Is lunch included on this full-day tour?
No, you have free time between the canal cruise and the museum visit to choose your own lunch spot.
How much walking is involved?
There's a real walking tour component through the city center in the morning, in addition to the museum visit and canal cruise, so comfortable shoes matter for this one.

Also Available:

›Amsterdam Walking Tour - For a shorter 4-hour introduction without the museum, this tour covers the same canal ring walking tour and canal cruise on its own.
›In the Footsteps of Anne Frank - If the Anne Frank House is your priority, this 4-hour tour goes inside the museum and walks the Jordaan in more depth.
›Dutch Treats: Amsterdam & Beyond - To trade the museum for an afternoon in the Dutch countryside instead, this tour pairs city highlights with a visit to Volendam.

If you are looking at shore excursions not through your cruise line, I would highly recommend booking through Private Shore Trips. Steven Hurley arranged our private tour for our small group of 4. Maria our guide and driver met us on the pier as we exited the ship. She showed us to her very comfortable van where we began our tour. Maria gave us a great deal of information as she drove us around and made stops when we wanted.

We like the private tours Our guide was on time, our van was very comfortableclean. We toured city the day before so we went straight for the country side. I would make sure you toured the city first. We visited cheese farms, the windmills and experienced the making of the wooden clogs. The open air Windmill Village Museum was very interesting.

We want to thank you for the great job you did on planning and organizing our trip to Europe. The eight of us had a great time as well as being pleasantly surprised at how well the trip was organized, how gracious our drivers and guides were how pertinent your suggestions were. We will be having friends go in the spring and will be referring them to you.

Our guide - forget his name!, showed us the best of Amsterdam,  the Rijksmuseum to the  Jordaan district. We took a canal cruise and saw some windmills.  I cant believe I forgot the name of the guide.  I recommend him.  Austria and Belgium were also magnificent!  Gertrude showed us her love of the Bruges.  She was great!
