TOUR DESCRIPTION

Hidden Gems: Giethoorn & Elburg

This private Amsterdam shore trip trades the city for two of the Netherlands' most distinctive small towns, Giethoorn and Elburg. It is an excellent way to avoid the crowds of central Amsterdam on a full 8-hour day built entirely around the Dutch countryside.

After meeting your guide, you drive about 75 miles (120km) northeast into the province of Overijssel to reach Giethoorn, often called the Venice of the Netherlands. The village was settled in the 13th century by peat diggers, and the ponds and channels left behind by centuries of peat extraction became the canals that define the village today. Giethoorn still has no roads in its historic center, only canals, footpaths, and small wooden bridges, so you park outside the village and walk in. Bicycles and canal punts are the way to get around, and a canal cruise past the thatched-roof farmhouses is the classic way to see it. Giethoorn tends to draw crowds by early afternoon, so your guide plans this stop for the quieter part of the day.

From Giethoorn you continue to Elburg, a fortified Hanseatic town that received city rights in 1233. After a series of floods in the 14th century, the town was rebuilt in 1392 on a rare, regular grid plan and enclosed with walls and a moat, which is largely why its medieval street pattern still survives today. You have free time for lunch (meal not included) and to walk the cobbled streets past the old harbor and the town's fortifications; if you are interested, your guide can also show you the Elburg Museum, the historic city gates, and St. Nicholas Church.

Later in the afternoon you return to the pier in Amsterdam, having spent the day in two of the Netherlands' most picturesque towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the name Giethoorn mean and where does it come from?
Local legend traces the name to goat horns unearthed by early peat-digging settlers, thought to belong to wild goats swept away in a 12th century flood. The village grew up around the ponds and channels those diggers left behind.
What makes Elburg's street plan unusual?
After floods forced the town to relocate in the 14th century, Elburg was rebuilt in 1392 on a rare, regular grid layout inside a walled and moated perimeter, which is why the town's medieval plan is still so intact today.
Why does the tour visit Giethoorn before Elburg rather than after?
Giethoorn tends to get busy by early afternoon, so we plan the visit there first thing to give you a quieter experience of the canals before moving on to Elburg.
Is lunch included in Elburg?
No, you have free time in Elburg to choose your own lunch spot along the harbor or the cobbled streets.

Also Available:

›Traditional Holland: Clogs, Cheese & Windmills - For a different slice of the Dutch countryside built around cheese and clog-making, this tour visits a working farm, Edam, and a UNESCO windmill.
›Amsterdam Walking Tour - To add Amsterdam's own canal ring on a separate, shorter port day, this 4-hour tour covers the Begijnhof, the Bloemenmarkt, and a canal cruise.

If you are looking at shore excursions not through your cruise line, I would highly recommend booking through Private Shore Trips. Steven Hurley arranged our private tour for our small group of 4. Maria our guide and driver met us on the pier as we exited the ship. She showed us to her very comfortable van where we began our tour. Maria gave us a great deal of information as she drove us around and made stops when we wanted.

We like the private tours Our guide was on time, our van was very comfortableclean. We toured city the day before so we went straight for the country side. I would make sure you toured the city first. We visited cheese farms, the windmills and experienced the making of the wooden clogs. The open air Windmill Village Museum was very interesting.

We want to thank you for the great job you did on planning and organizing our trip to Europe. The eight of us had a great time as well as being pleasantly surprised at how well the trip was organized, how gracious our drivers and guides were how pertinent your suggestions were. We will be having friends go in the spring and will be referring them to you.

Our guide - forget his name!, showed us the best of Amsterdam,  the Rijksmuseum to the  Jordaan district. We took a canal cruise and saw some windmills.  I cant believe I forgot the name of the guide.  I recommend him.  Austria and Belgium were also magnificent!  Gertrude showed us her love of the Bruges.  She was great!
