TOUR DESCRIPTION

Amsterdam Canals & Walking Tour Shore Excursion

This private Amsterdam walking tour is the fastest way to get your bearings in the city of canals, on foot and by water, in just 4 hours. Your guide meets you at the pier and walks with you directly into the historic center.

The route passes through the Begijnhof, the oldest of Amsterdam's hidden courtyards. A document dated 31 July 1346 records the plot being given to a community of Beguines, laywomen who lived together and devoted themselves to prayer and charity without taking formal religious vows. Amsterdam's oldest surviving wooden house still stands inside this courtyard, tucked away from the street.

From there you walk to the Bloemenmarkt, the floating flower market on the Singel Canal. Growers first brought flowers into the city by barge in 1862, and while the boats are now permanently moored in place, the market still technically sits on the water rather than on land, the only market of its kind anywhere.

Your guide continues past the Magere Brug, the Skinny Bridge, sharing the stories behind its name, then through the Jewish Quarter, where you learn about the neighborhood's history during the German occupation of the Second World War and see the exterior of the house where Anne Frank and her family hid. The walk finishes in the Red Light District, one of the oldest parts of the city, where narrow cobbled lanes and 14th century architecture surround the Gothic Oude Kerk, Amsterdam's oldest church.

After the walking portion, you board a canal cruise, still one of the best ways to see Amsterdam's gabled merchant houses and historic bridges. The route runs through the city's 17th century canal ring, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 for its planned, largely intact Golden Age street pattern. At the end of the tour your guide walks back with you to the pier, or you are welcome to stay in the city and explore further on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Begijnhof and why does it matter?
It's the oldest of Amsterdam's hidden courtyards. A document dated 31 July 1346 records the plot being given to a community of Beguines, Catholic laywomen who lived communally without taking formal vows. Amsterdam's oldest surviving house still stands inside it.
Why is the Bloemenmarkt called a "floating" market?
It started in 1862 when growers brought flowers into the city by barge along the Singel Canal and sold them right off the boats. The barges are now permanently moored in place, but the market technically still sits on the water rather than on land.
Is the canal cruise included, or does it cost extra?
It's included. The route runs through Amsterdam's 17th century canal ring, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 for its intact Golden Age layout.
Can this tour be extended to see more of Amsterdam?
Yes. If 4 hours isn't enough, ask about our Best of Amsterdam tour, which adds a museum visit and more free time to the same walking tour and canal cruise.

Also Available:

›Best of Amsterdam - For a fuller day, this 8-hour version adds a canal cruise, a museum visit at the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum, and free time in the Jordaan.
›Traditional Holland: Clogs, Cheese & Windmills - For a countryside day instead of the city, this tour visits a working farm, the cheese town of Edam, and a UNESCO windmill.

If you are looking at shore excursions not through your cruise line, I would highly recommend booking through Private Shore Trips. Steven Hurley arranged our private tour for our small group of 4. Maria our guide and driver met us on the pier as we exited the ship. She showed us to her very comfortable van where we began our tour. Maria gave us a great deal of information as she drove us around and made stops when we wanted.

We like the private tours Our guide was on time, our van was very comfortableclean. We toured city the day before so we went straight for the country side. I would make sure you toured the city first. We visited cheese farms, the windmills and experienced the making of the wooden clogs. The open air Windmill Village Museum was very interesting.

We want to thank you for the great job you did on planning and organizing our trip to Europe. The eight of us had a great time as well as being pleasantly surprised at how well the trip was organized, how gracious our drivers and guides were how pertinent your suggestions were. We will be having friends go in the spring and will be referring them to you.

Our guide - forget his name!, showed us the best of Amsterdam,  the Rijksmuseum to the  Jordaan district. We took a canal cruise and saw some windmills.  I cant believe I forgot the name of the guide.  I recommend him.  Austria and Belgium were also magnificent!  Gertrude showed us her love of the Bruges.  She was great!
