TOUR DESCRIPTION

Valletta Co-Cathedral & Grand Master's Palace Shore Excursion

This full day Valletta shore excursion gives you an unhurried, in-depth look at Malta's capital, its history and its architecture. Highlights include interior visits to St. John's Co-Cathedral and the Grand Master's Palace, plus The Malta Experience, a multimedia film covering the island's history.

Your private licensed guide meets you at the pier and drives you up to the highest point of the 16th century city, built in six years by a workforce of 8,000 under the Knights of St. John. From the Upper Barrakka Gardens, perched on limestone fortifications above the Mediterranean, you get commanding views over Valletta's Grand Harbor. It's also where your guide sets the historical stage, explaining Malta's strategic importance over the past 7,500 years.

Walking along Republic Street, Valletta's main pedestrian thoroughfare, your guide explains Malta's role as the last line of Allied defense in the Mediterranean during World War II. From there you continue to St. John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta's most important historic and artistic treasure. Dating to the 16th century, its interior is covered in carved stonework, gilded columns, and a floor made from more than four hundred inlaid marble tombstones memorializing knights from across Europe. Two paintings by Caravaggio hang in the Oratory.

Next you visit the Grand Master's Palace, home to Malta's parliament and the president's office. In the Tapestry Chambers, Gobelins tapestries cover the walls, and you'll see suits of armor lining the halls and elaborate state rooms surrounding the palace's open courtyards. Most tours skip the palace's Fine Arts Museum, but this itinerary includes time to see its collection of works by Tintoretto and other masters.

After the palace, you have free time to have lunch (not included), shop for souvenirs, and wander Valletta's narrow streets, where enclosed wooden balconies overhang the honey colored limestone buildings characteristic of Maltese architecture.

In the afternoon, you visit Fort St. Elmo for The Malta Experience, a 45 minute film covering the dramatic history of the Maltese islands. It's a useful way to see parts of Malta's story that a single day on the ground can't otherwise cover. Afterward, you walk along the old city's bastions before returning to the pier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if we're running late getting back to the ship in Valletta?
That's exactly what our Back-to-Ship Guarantee is designed to prevent on Valletta tours. If a delay caused by our tour operator keeps you from returning to the ship on time, we'll arrange and cover your transportation to catch up with the ship at its next port of call. To qualify, your tour needs to be scheduled to return at least 1.5 hours before the ship's departure, and you'll need to be back at the vehicle for every agreed meeting time during the day.
What's the deposit for a Valletta shore excursion?
Your Valletta spot is secured with a $50 per-tour deposit. The remaining balance is due 30 days before your tour date. If your plans change, that deposit isn't refundable, but it stays on your account as credit toward any tour for up to 3 years. Larger groups, custom itineraries, or tours involving flights or overnight stays may carry a bigger deposit and their own terms, which we'll spell out at booking.
Can I get a refund if I cancel my Valletta tour?
A Valletta cancellation made 15+ days before the tour date is refundable, less a $50 fee. Inside 14 days of the tour date, cancellations become non-refundable. One exception: if your ship simply doesn't call at Valletta because of weather, mechanical issues, or political unrest, you'll get a full refund less the $50 fee. All cancellation requests need to be submitted in writing by email.
How do I find my driver when I arrive in Valletta?
Cruise Ship: Your first step off the ship at Valletta is to find the terminal's main public exit. Terminal building present? Walk through arrivals to the public pickup zone outside, with cruise staff able to point the way. No terminal building? Your driver's already waiting dockside. If you don't spot your contact right away, hold your position near the exit and call the dispatch number in your confirmation. Hotel: Look for your driver or guide right outside the main entrance or in the lobby -- they'll be holding a sign with your group name. Airport: Once you've collected your luggage and cleared customs, head into the arrivals hall -- your driver or guide will be there holding a sign with your group name.
Do I need to pay separately for admission tickets on my Valletta tour?
For Valletta tours, entrance fees are included exactly where the tour page lists them. Keep in mind some venues require timed, skip-the-line tickets that become non-refundable the moment they're purchased. We'll flag any non-refundable entrance fees for you at booking.
Can we add a stop to our Valletta tour that isn't on the standard itinerary?
Private touring in Valletta comes with real room to adjust the plan. Mention any must-see sight to your driver or guide at pickup, and they'll do their best to work it in. Traffic and time constraints can occasionally limit how much we can change, but your guide will always try to keep things personal.

We were 2 and a half hours late in arriving at the airport where we were to be picked up for a 4 hour excursion which was scheduled to end by 2pm but the tour operator allowed for an extension of the tour till 3pm without extra charge. We had good guides clean and fairly new vehicles. Itineraries were interesting and flexible.

Everything went perfectly throughout the entire trip. I could not have asked for anything better with regard to price, quality, guides and buses. Ill make sure and add a good recommend to your facebook blog when I return. Please feel free to use me for references. As someone who has traveled for years, been a travel agent for over 18, and have used many tour companies, I can be quite critical and jaded. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about my experience with PST or with the companies you booked. Thanks again for everything.

Everything went very well on our Malta tour. Our guide was very helpful. We certainly found private tours more enjoyable than bus tours. I would certainly recommend your tours to people I know. We have arrived back. Our Ashdod tour was also brilliant. Every thing went well and I certainly would recommend it to other travelers.
