TOUR DESCRIPTION

Lucca & Pisa Shore Excursion from Livorno

This tour visits the Tuscan towns of Lucca and Pisa which are both relatively close to Livorno so it makes a nice option for those who do not want too much driving. You have free time in both towns.

After meeting your driver guide at the pier in Livorno, you drive to the walled Tuscan town of Lucca, located about 32 miles (51 km) from Livorno, which has lots of lovely narrow, medieval streets to explore. Your driver guide will explain the top sites but you decide how to spend your time. The city has some wonderful examples of Roman, medieval and Renaissance architecture and some grand churches, including the Duomo di San Martino, which contains the Volto Santo (Holy Face), a wooden figure of Christ, whose face is considered to be a true likeness of the face of Christ. It was carved by Nicodemus, who was present at the crucifixion.

While in Lucca, you should visit the Renaissance walls and ramparts. Today they are a beautiful public walkway popular with tourists and locals alike. You may choose to visit one of Lucca's grand villas or the birthplace of operatic composer, Giacomo Puccini. The home contains a museum which houses precious relics and memorabilia including drafts, scores, photos, letters, honors, and paintings.

After exploring, you have free time for lunch (meal not included) in one of the cafes or pizzerias in town.

Later this afternoon you drive to Pisa, about 12 miles (20 km) away, to visit the Piazza dei Miracoli or Field of Miracles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. This pedestrian area is one of the finest architectural ensembles in the world, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo (cathedral), a Romanesque masterpiece dating back to the 11th century. If you are looking for a last minute souvenir or an afternoon Italian ice cream, you can also find it here.

At the end of the day you are brought back to the pier in Livorno.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, our Livorno tours and Livorno Shore Excursions can also be customized to fit your needs. Frequently Asked Questions

Why were the walls of Lucca built, and were they ever used in battle?
Lucca's Renaissance walls were built between 1544 and 1648 to protect the independent Republic of Lucca from the expansionist ambitions of nearby Florence. Despite the effort put into their construction, the walls were never breached and never saw military use. Today the 4 kilometer circuit is a public walkway and park.
Why does the Leaning Tower of Pisa lean?
Construction began in 1173 on unstable, sandy subsoil, and the tower's foundation started settling unevenly before the third of eight planned floors was finished, causing the visible tilt. A war between Pisa and Genoa halted construction for nearly a century, which allowed the ground to settle further and likely kept the tower from collapsing. It was finally completed almost 200 years after it began.
Is this tour a good option if we do not want a lot of driving?
Yes. Lucca is about 32 miles (51 km) from Livorno and Pisa is only about 12 miles (20 km) away, both shorter drives than tours that head deeper into Tuscany. That means more time exploring both towns and less time in the vehicle.

We had a wonderful vacation. Every one of the tour guides were great. My family was really impressed with their knowledge, service, and friendliness. I was pleasantly surprised with how much better an experience we had compared to the Princess Cruise Ship Tours. For example, our tour guide for the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii knew that Pompeii was closed until 1130 AM and changed our itinerary to travel along the coast in the morning and go to Pompeii at the end of the day. The other tours just took people to the gate and waited for two hours. Thanks again. My wife and kids felt that each guide was a   friend   by the end of the tour. The guides in Florence and Ephesus were probably the highlight for us. The Mercedes vans that were used in most cities were always nice and all of our drivers were really great. Ive already recommended you to a friend.

Today was our last excursion booked through your company. The trips in Florence and Nice were both great, with good hosts. But by far the best guide was Tom today in Kotor. He is excellent and I cannot say enough good about his knowledge and demeanor. 5 stars for him. Thanks for all

We booked a few tours at last minute from our cruise ship as our Oceania shore excursions were pretty bad. We arranged our trip through Steven by email and Internet was spotty on the ship. He was quick to respond and was able to customize our trip for the day. We had 3 couples and Ynne was our guide. He was the best guide that we had had during our 12 day trip.
