Castellana Caves Shore Excursion from BariSome cruise ships are only in the port of Bari for a few hours, so we offer this short but interesting excursion to the natural Caves of Castellana. After meeting your guide, you depart directly for the caves near the town of Castellana Grotte. In past centuries, these large underground cavities were used by local farmers for storage, and later avoided altogether as stories of monsters and ghosts took hold. In 1938, the speleologist Franco Anelli explored the caves and uncovered their true scale: an underground system extending more than 3,300 meters (2 miles) and reaching a maximum depth of about 122 meters (400 feet) below ground level. As you descend deeper into the system, you pass through chambers where pale, almost white stalactite and stalagmite formations have built up over millions of years. Castellana is especially popular with Italian visitors during the August vacation month, when roughly half of the caves' annual visitors come through. After your visit, you return to the pier in Bari. Please note - Mobility: Due to uneven surfaces, steps, and walking distances, this itinerary is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs. Please contact us for alternative sightseeing options, including private driving tours that may better accommodate your needs.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWho discovered the Caves of Castellana?
The Italian speleologist Franco Anelli explored and mapped the caves in 1938, revealing a system that extends more than 3,300 meters (2 miles) underground. Before his exploration, local legend held that the caves were home to monsters and ghosts, which kept most people away.
Why are the formations inside the caves so white?
The final chamber on the full tour route, known as the White Grotto, contains alabaster-like formations that are unusually pale because of the purity of the calcium carbonate deposits, a rarer coloring than the iron and mineral stained formations found in most caves.
Is this tour accessible for guests with mobility limitations?
No wheelchairs are accommodated, and the visit involves walking on uneven, sometimes damp cave surfaces with changes in elevation.
How much free time do we have at the caves?
This is a guided visit rather than free exploration time; the cave tour itself runs about an hour before you return to the ship.
