TOUR DESCRIPTION

Alberobello Shore Excursion from Bari

This is the most popular Bari shore trip for guests with limited time in port. It visits the fairy tale town of Alberobello, known for its whitewashed, round trulli houses with gray, cone-shaped stone roofs.

After meeting your guide, you travel along a scenic road through olive groves and along the coast, through the traditional landscape of southern Italy, until you reach Alberobello. The town is filled with trulli, a style of building common throughout Apulia, but Alberobello is unique for being an entire town built almost entirely of them. The word trullo comes from the Latin turris, meaning tower. The old town has about a hundred of these structures on a hillside surrounded by olive trees. The exact origin of the circular, stone teepee-roofed buildings is unknown, though local tradition places it as far back as 5,000 years; a more commonly cited historical theory ties their spread to the Middle Ages, when heavy house taxation encouraged builders to use dry stone construction that could be dismantled quickly to avoid inspection. Today the buildings are permanent, and stepping inside is worthwhile: the conical roof covers a single room, often divided by colorful curtains, in sharp contrast to the stark white walls. Simple furniture made from olive wood, the work of local farmers who have lived in these buildings for generations, fills the interiors. The thick stone walls keep the buildings cool in summer, while a central hearth provided heat in winter. In 1996, Alberobello was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

While in Alberobello, you have a short amount of free time for lunch on your own. At the end of the tour, you return to the pier in Bari.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Alberobello have so many trulli when other Apulian towns don't?
Trulli were built throughout the region, but a historical theory holds that Alberobello's feudal lords in the 15th to 17th centuries encouraged dry stone construction specifically because it could be dismantled on short notice, helping residents avoid property taxes and inspections tied to permanent buildings. Over time, the practice became the town's defining architectural style rather than a temporary workaround.
What is inside a trullo?
Most trulli are a single conical-roofed room, sometimes divided by curtains into separate areas, furnished simply with olive wood pieces made by generations of local farmers. Many in Alberobello's historic districts are now shops, cafes, or small guesthouses rather than private homes.
Is this tour accessible for guests with mobility limitations?
No wheelchairs are accommodated, and Alberobello's old town is walked on cobblestone streets.
Is lunch included on this tour?
No, but there is a short amount of free time in Alberobello to get lunch on your own.

Thank you so much. We enjoyed the guides you provided for us. We have ALREADY mentioned your company to others. I hope we were gracious enough for your people. We were a bit unsure what to tip and hope the guides were satisfied with what we did give. I really appreciate your attention to detail with our tours and we were extremely happy. Thank you.

Three days of tours in Puglia with wonderful guides, Floriana and two days with Paolo. We visited beautiful towns like Alberobello, Ostuni, Matera, Martina Franca, Altamura, Monopoli, Locorotondo. Our guides were not only very knowledgeable but also very warm and friendly. The weather was unusually rainy and cold for this time of the year but our guides made sure we didn miss anything.

I just want to tell you that the 3 tours in Puglia were great.  The service was wonderful.  The two guides that we had were very nice, explained everything very well and were always eager to please us.  That region is beautiful and my friends and I were very happy with the experience.  I know it rained and was very cold but we cannot control the weather. Also, the vehicles were very good and the drivers also.
