TOUR DESCRIPTION

Ancient Akrotiri & Wine Tasting Shore Excursion from Santorini

This Santorini shore trip visits the ancient site of Akrotiri, the village which was buried in volcanic ash around 1450 BC and today is an outside archaeological site. As a bonus you will stop for a wine tasting before returning to Fira, and your ship.

You will transfer from the ship by colorful local kaiki (tenders) to Fira port, where you will meet your private guide. Together you will go up the cliff to Fira by cable car where you will be lead to meet your driver and private vehicle.

You start your tour by driving to the southern side of the island through to the Archaeological site of Akrotiri. This town was once an important commercial center in the Aegean sea but it was buried in the volcano that erupted around 1450 BC. One detail that surprises many visitors: unlike Pompeii, excavators have found no human remains at Akrotiri, suggesting residents had enough warning, likely from earthquakes and tremors in the weeks before, to evacuate the town before the eruption buried it.

Amazing ruins have been excavated here, buried some thirty feet below the earth's surface after the eruption of the island's volcano. Under a protective cover you'll visit the ancient city squares, cobblestone streets and peer into some of the houses and shops, some two and three stories high. Some historians and archaeologists have pointed to Akrotiri, a sophisticated town wiped out in a single catastrophic event, as a possible inspiration behind Plato's legend of Atlantis, though the theory remains debated.

After the tour of the excavations you will stop at a winery where you sample the local wines. Five tastings per person are included. Winemaking on Santorini is not a modern industry: excavations at Akrotiri itself have turned up grape pips, wine presses, and storage vessels showing that residents were making wine here roughly 3,600 years ago, making this one of the oldest continuously cultivated wine regions anywhere in the world. Look for Vinsanto on the tasting list, an amber, sun dried dessert wine that carries that same winemaking tradition forward today.

At the end of tour you will continue on through the beautiful countryside to Fira, the picturesque capital town of the island built on the rim of the caldera wall. You can enjoy the town at leisure or perhaps relax over a coffee and enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of the volcanic island, the caldera and the sea before you take the cable car back down to the pier.

This tour is not available on Monday when the site of Akrotiri is closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why haven't any bodies been found at Akrotiri?
Unlike Pompeii, no human remains have been discovered at Akrotiri, which suggests residents had enough warning from earthquakes before the eruption to evacuate safely, taking their most valuable belongings with them.
Is Akrotiri really connected to the Atlantis legend?
It's a popular theory. Some historians point to Akrotiri, an advanced Bronze Age town destroyed in a single catastrophic eruption, as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis, though the connection is debated among scholars.
How old is winemaking on Santorini?
Excavations at Akrotiri have uncovered grape pips and wine making equipment dating back roughly 3,600 years, making Santorini one of the oldest continuously cultivated wine regions in the world.
What is meze, and will we see it during the wine tasting?
Meze refers to the small shared plates, olives, cheese, and local snacks, traditionally served alongside wine or ouzo in Greece, and it's common for wineries here to pair a tasting with a small plate of local bites rather than a full meal.

Our trip was fabulous. Our flights were on time, the weather was great and the sites so amazing! Our tours and guides were excellent. I dont have their names handy but all were extremely knowledgeable and we loved their passion for their countries. Should we venture back to Europe we will definitely contact you again. I will surely recommend your company to anyone traveling in Europe.

What a great time all of us had. Mostly because of our tours with the people you booked us with. I cant say enough about our tours, guides, drivers and vehicles...All of us were impressed with each of them and have already recommended your company to people we know who have upcoming trips to Europe. Plans are being drawn up for our next trip in 2 years..I must admit I was afraid something would go wrong, and being the one in charge of the bookings all of the blame would fall on me if one of the tours didnt show up...Well what a hoot when we got off the boat in all 3 places and there was my name on the bus....Once again thank you for all of your help

Andreas (Andrew) was our guide and he was also very good, spoke English very well and gave us a lot of informationhistory. With the ceremony being first and the chosen location, it did interfere with the rest of our itinerary. We really only stepped on the black sand beach, did not go to the red sand beach at all, went back to the Prophet Elias Monastery for the views and walked a bit in Oia. We did not really walk around Fira at all except to get from the cablecar to the van and back to the cable car. It probably would have worked better to just have the ceremony on an area of one of the beaches - the location of the ceremony was beautiful but relatively out of the way for everything else we did. We seemed to be driving a lot more than we were out of the car. The winery was fantastic, but a bit rushed because we needed to be back on the ship earlier than anticipated (COVID testing for return to the US was held on the ship from 6-8p, even though the ship didnt leave port until 930). The celebrant and photographer were perfect.

The tour of Santorini was a wonderful experience. The guide was waiting for us as the tender docked (had to tender in from the ship to the dock at Santorini). We were quickly lead to the cable car so the tour began almost the instant we arrived. The guide was pleasant, professional, and extremely informative. The driver was super. All the streets in Europe are narrow and very crowded. His was careful and very skilled. To enjoy the brea

Ken Diaz the Group Reservation Manager of Private Shore Trips organized an amazing set of tourstransportation events for our group of 42 friends and family in MULTIPLE countries! Yes Italy, Greece & Turkey!! Or tour guides provided excellent connections with the entire group and gave a dissertation on the history of each location we visited. We had teachers in our group and they were impressed with the tour guides that says a lot!
