TOUR DESCRIPTION

Oia, Fira Museum & Wine Tasting Shore Excursion from Santorini

This private Santorini tour combines the top sites on Santorini including the village of Oia, the Prehistoric Museum in Fira, a panoramic driving tour and a wine tasting.

You will transfer from the ship by colorful local kaiki (tenders) to Fira port, where you will meet your private guide. Together you will go up the cliff to Fira by cable car where you will be lead to meet your driver and private vehicle.

Your private guide will explain the history of the island as your drive to a local winery. Wine making has become popular in Santorini and you will learn about the interesting techniques used to grown grapes in an island that only receives about 15 inches of rain per year. Vines here are trained into a low basket shape called kouloura, coiled close to the ground so the fruit grows sheltered inside, protected from the island's constant winds and salt spray while trapping what little moisture the volcanic soil holds onto overnight. After learning about local techniques, you then enjoy a wine tasting of 2-3 wines (typically white, red and dessert).

After a guided tour of the winery, you are invited to sample some of the wines with local cheese and traditional snacks. One of the wines you'll likely taste is Vinsanto, an amber dessert wine made from sun dried grapes that has been produced on the island for centuries. Santorini growers once exported enormous quantities of it to Russian Orthodox monasteries, a trade that collapsed almost overnight after the 1917 Russian Revolution closed most of Russia's churches, pushing island farmers to turn much of their land over to the small, intensely flavored Santorini cherry tomato instead. You will be impressed not only by the flavors but by one of the best views on the island.

Next you enjoy a panoramic driving tour with a stop at the highest point on this most beautiful island. You enjoy wonderful views from this vantage point as your guide explains the island's unique situation. From here you gain a full understanding of the unique volcanic shape.

Next you drive to the northern most point on the island to visit the village of Oia. This dramatic village, built on a steep crest of the caldera, has many of its dwellings nestled into niches hewn from the volcanic rock.

The village was once the home of wealthy seafarers, a fact still evident in their two story mansions painted pastel colors. Much of Oia had to be rebuilt after a major 1956 earthquake damaged large parts of the island, and many of the cave style homes you see tucked into the cliffside today were restored or reconstructed in the decades since. Your guide will walk with you among the narrow cobbled streets where you'll come across many tiny shops of local ceramic art, paintings and semi precious jewelry. Coffee shops perched on the edge of the cliffs offer spectacular views of Fira and the volcano below.

While you are in Oia, you enjoy free time for lunch (meal not included). If you want to try something distinctly local, look for fava, a smooth yellow split pea puree grown on the island and topped with olive oil, capers and onion, or tomatokeftedes, fried fritters made from Santorini's small, sweet cherry tomatoes.

Later you return to the capital city of Fira where your guide will lead you through the Prehistoric Museum. This museum is considered one of the best museums in Greece and the top attraction in Fira. You'll see the treasures that have been discovered at the excavation site of Akrotiri.

Akrotiri is the main town which was buried in the volcano that erupted around 1450 BC. The excavation site is not open to the public, but this museum shows its amazing discoveries.

Highlights include an oven, bath tub, the beautiful House of Ladies frescoes and the Gold Ibex Figurine. This tiny figurine is small and in some ways may seem unimportant, but when you realize that the town of Akrotiri dates to the 16th century BC, making this object about 3,500 years old, you will be able to appreciate its beauty.

When you are done with your tour, you may choose to remain in town at your leisure, or return immediately to the ship by taking the cable car to the pier far below the cliff's edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Santorini farmers start growing tomatoes instead of grapes?
Santorini's Vinsanto dessert wine was once exported in huge volumes to Russian Orthodox monasteries, but that market collapsed after the 1917 Russian Revolution closed most churches in Russia, so farmers shifted much of their land to the small, sweet Santorini cherry tomato instead, which once supported 14 processing factories on the island.
What is fava, and is it the same as fava beans?
Confusingly, no. Santorini's fava is a smooth puree made from yellow split peas, not the green fava beans known in the US, and it has been grown on the island's volcanic soil for thousands of years.
Is ouzo the same thing as Greek wine?
No. Ouzo is Greece's national anise flavored spirit, typically served alongside meze small plates rather than a meal on its own, and it's a different drink entirely from the Vinsanto and Assyrtiko wines produced on Santorini.
What happened to Oia in 1956?
A major earthquake struck the island in 1956, damaging large parts of Oia and other villages. Many of the cliffside cave houses tourists admire today were rebuilt or restored in the decades that followed.

Our trip was fabulous. Our flights were on time, the weather was great and the sites so amazing! Our tours and guides were excellent. I dont have their names handy but all were extremely knowledgeable and we loved their passion for their countries. Should we venture back to Europe we will definitely contact you again. I will surely recommend your company to anyone traveling in Europe.

What a great time all of us had. Mostly because of our tours with the people you booked us with. I cant say enough about our tours, guides, drivers and vehicles...All of us were impressed with each of them and have already recommended your company to people we know who have upcoming trips to Europe. Plans are being drawn up for our next trip in 2 years..I must admit I was afraid something would go wrong, and being the one in charge of the bookings all of the blame would fall on me if one of the tours didnt show up...Well what a hoot when we got off the boat in all 3 places and there was my name on the bus....Once again thank you for all of your help

Andreas (Andrew) was our guide and he was also very good, spoke English very well and gave us a lot of informationhistory. With the ceremony being first and the chosen location, it did interfere with the rest of our itinerary. We really only stepped on the black sand beach, did not go to the red sand beach at all, went back to the Prophet Elias Monastery for the views and walked a bit in Oia. We did not really walk around Fira at all except to get from the cablecar to the van and back to the cable car. It probably would have worked better to just have the ceremony on an area of one of the beaches - the location of the ceremony was beautiful but relatively out of the way for everything else we did. We seemed to be driving a lot more than we were out of the car. The winery was fantastic, but a bit rushed because we needed to be back on the ship earlier than anticipated (COVID testing for return to the US was held on the ship from 6-8p, even though the ship didnt leave port until 930). The celebrant and photographer were perfect.

The tour of Santorini was a wonderful experience. The guide was waiting for us as the tender docked (had to tender in from the ship to the dock at Santorini). We were quickly lead to the cable car so the tour began almost the instant we arrived. The guide was pleasant, professional, and extremely informative. The driver was super. All the streets in Europe are narrow and very crowded. His was careful and very skilled. To enjoy the brea

Ken Diaz the Group Reservation Manager of Private Shore Trips organized an amazing set of tourstransportation events for our group of 42 friends and family in MULTIPLE countries! Yes Italy, Greece & Turkey!! Or tour guides provided excellent connections with the entire group and gave a dissertation on the history of each location we visited. We had teachers in our group and they were impressed with the tour guides that says a lot!
