TOUR DESCRIPTION

Ancient Olympia Shore Excursion from Katakolon

This private tour from Katakolon visits the site of Ancient Olympia and its Archaeological Museum, home to treasures recovered from the site over more than a century of excavation.

After meeting your guide, you depart for Olympia, where the first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC in honor of Zeus. The site sits in a fertile valley where the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers meet, a setting as scenic as it is historically significant. Your guide leads a walking tour through the Altis, the sacred precinct where the games took place. The most imposing structure here was the Temple of Zeus, which once housed a gold-and-ivory statue of the god considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nearby stood the Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion, and the Philippeion. The Stadium itself, the largest of its era with capacity for 45,000 spectators, is entered through a long vaulted passage built in Roman times.

From the archaeological site, you continue to the museum nearby, where highlights include the Head of Hera, Praxiteles' statue of Hermes, ornaments from the Temple of Zeus, and the helmet of Miltiades, the Athenian general credited with the victory at Marathon. At the end of the tour, you return to the pier in Katakolon.

Walking note: the site involves uneven, sometimes difficult surfaces, and it is not wheelchair accessible. If you have a larger group, this tour can be arranged with a mid-size bus or full-size coach.

Please note
  • Mobility: Due to uneven surfaces, steps, and walking distances, this itinerary is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs. Please contact us for alternative sightseeing options, including private driving tours that may better accommodate your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Ancient Olympia from the Katakolon cruise port?
Ancient Olympia is about 25 miles inland from Katakolon, roughly a 40-minute drive each way.
Is a private tour worth it for such a short distance?
Yes. Katakolon has very few licensed guides available, and they book out quickly in peak season. A private tour guarantees your guide and vehicle in advance and lets you move through the site at your own pace, without waiting on a large group.
Is Ancient Olympia wheelchair accessible?
No. The archaeological site has uneven, difficult walking surfaces that aren't suitable for wheelchairs.
What will we see at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia?
The museum houses finds excavated from the site, including the Head of Hera, Praxiteles' statue of Hermes, decorative elements from the Temple of Zeus, and the helmet of the Athenian general Miltiades.

What a great time all of us had. Mostly because of our tours with the people you booked us with. I cant say enough about our tours, guides, drivers and vehicles...All of us were impressed with each of them and have already recommended your company to people we know who have upcoming trips to Europe. Plans are being drawn up for our next trip in 2 years..I must admit I was afraid something would go wrong, and being the one in charge of the bookings all of the blame would fall on me if one of the tours didnt show up...Well what a hoot when we got off the boat in all 3 places and there was my name on the bus....Once again thank you for all of your help

Ken Diaz the Group Reservation Manager of Private Shore Trips organized an amazing set of tourstransportation events for our group of 42 friends and family in MULTIPLE countries! Yes Italy, Greece & Turkey!! Or tour guides provided excellent connections with the entire group and gave a dissertation on the history of each location we visited. We had teachers in our group and they were impressed with the tour guides that says a lot!

All of our tours were just fantatic.  In Athens, the Acropolis was simply awesome and we had a wonderful time in the Plaka.  I wish we could have had lunch in one of those roof top bars.  That would have been awesome.  In Katakolon, the farm you recommended was so nice, peaceful and the hosts were so welcoming.  The other tours in Greece were great but those were the highlights for us.  Thank you also for telling the guide to walk slowly - my mother appreciated it.

Thank you so much for working with me on changing the itinerary. It was the absolute perfect day. Our guide Michaela was amazing!! She made the day perfect. We saw Minori and Maiori. Walked the lemon path and saw so many amazing things and ended at Vietri su mare. I feel it was the perfect itinerary. No crowds and just the most beautiful views. The walk on the lemon path was challenging but we did it. Amazing day. Thank you!!!

All the guides were very knowledgeable about each of the place we went (Rhodes, Athens and Katakolon). We wish we had more time in Greece. There are too many places in Greece to visit.
