TOUR DESCRIPTION

Folk Museum and Melissani Lake

This Argostoli shore excursion focuses on Cephalonia's history, from a 19th century lighthouse and a WWII memorial to a folk museum, before a boat ride through an underground lake and a photo stop at one of the island's best known beaches.

After meeting your guide, you begin with a scenic drive to the Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi, a circular, 20-column structure on a man-made peninsula near Argostoli. It was built in 1828 under British administrator Charles Napier, destroyed in Cephalonia's devastating 1953 earthquake, and rebuilt to its original design in 1960.

From there you drive to the memorial for the Acqui Division, the site where thousands of Italian soldiers were executed by German forces in September 1943 following Italy's armistice in the Second World War, one of the largest massacres of prisoners of war during the conflict. The event later provided the historical background for the novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin and its film adaptation.

You then visit the Folklore Museum, which displays traditional costumes, tools, and household items that illustrate life on Cephalonia in the 19th century, along with personal items from the island's period of British rule and photographs of Cephalonia before the 1953 earthquake.

Next you take the coastal road to the Cave Lake of Melissani, where a short walk through a tunnel leads to the underground lake and small wooden boats carry you across the water and into the surrounding chambers.

Before returning to the pier, you stop for photos at Myrtos Beach, known for its pale pebble shoreline and turquoise water framed by steep cliffs. At the end of the excursion, your driver-guide returns you to the pier in Argostoli.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to the Acqui Division on Cephalonia?
After Italy's 1943 armistice with the Allies, the German garrison on Cephalonia demanded the Italian Acqui Division surrender its weapons. When the division refused, German forces executed thousands of Italian soldiers over several days, one of the largest massacres of prisoners of war in the Second World War, later dramatized in the novel and film Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
Why was the Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi rebuilt in 1960?
The original 1828 lighthouse was destroyed in the 1953 Ionian earthquake that devastated Cephalonia. It was rebuilt in 1960 by local architect Takis Pavlatos, faithfully reproducing the original design.
Is the Melissani Lake boat ride accessible for guests with mobility limitations?
No. Reaching the lake requires walking down a tunnel and boarding a small wooden boat, and the entrance is not wheelchair accessible.
Do we get to swim at Myrtos Beach?
No, this is a brief photo stop rather than a beach visit with free time, since the beach itself is a steep drive down from the viewpoint.

Katarena was our guide - very friendly and personable. Melissani Lake was beautiful, lines not too long. Drogarati Caves also very cool - did not realize how many steps there were to go down (our own fault) but all good! We spent a good bit of time there. Sami was not really what we expected - most shops were either very touristy or closed. The guide said most people stop there to have a mealdrink by the water in one of the restaurants. We ended up purchasing some local wine, beer and cups and just having our own toast by the water but not much to do there. Very nice, relaxing day with beautiful things to see.

We had an amazing private tour in Cephalonia this June (our cruise ship ported in Argostoli). We had a group of 25 (12 adults, 13 kids ranging from 6yrs - 19yrs old). We arranged a private bus and guide - and it was absolutely spectacular. The drive, the views, where we went for lunch, and of course the caves and underwater lakes were all worth it. I highly recommend working with this compan

Our driver and tour guide were fabulous. I would highly recommend Private Shore Trips to anyone. Our guides were so accommodating, and their knowledgeable of the area including many cities visited afforded our ability to see and experience much more than any tours offered by the cruise lines. Instead of the limited times and destinations offered by the cruise line, we were able to experience many spots known only to locals as well as the cannot-be-missed attractions. Our guide also provided historical facts about the places we were seeing which added to the flavor. We cant thank you enough for the personable professionalism extended by your company. Please feel free to utilize me as a very satisfied customer reference at any time.
