TOUR DESCRIPTION

Knossos Palace Shore Excursion from Agios Nikolaos

This private shore excursion from Agios Nikolaos travels west across Crete to the archaeological site of Knossos, approximately 45 miles from the port. The drive takes about one hour and fifteen minutes each way. Your licensed English-speaking guide meets you at the pier and leads a private guided tour of the site.

Knossos was the capital of the Minoan civilization, the earliest advanced culture in Europe, which flourished on Crete from approximately 2700 BC to 1450 BC. The palace complex served as the administrative, religious, and commercial center of the entire island. At its peak, the site covered several acres and housed thousands of people, with a level of architectural sophistication that would not be seen again in Europe for centuries.

The ruins visible today reflect multiple phases of construction. The original palace was built around 1900 BC, destroyed by an earthquake around 1700 BC, and rebuilt on a larger scale. The final destruction came around 1450 BC, linked by many historians to the volcanic eruption at Santorini. Despite this, the site continued to be inhabited until approximately 1400 BC.

The palace was excavated and partially reconstructed by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans beginning in 1900. The reconstructions remain debated among scholars but give visitors a clear sense of the scale and layout of the original complex. Your guide leads you through the royal living quarters, the throne room, the grand staircase, the storage magazines, the theater area, and the workshop zones, explaining the daily life, trade networks, and mythology of the Minoan world, including the legend of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur connected to this site.

After the guided visit, you have time in the museum shop before returning to Agios Nikolaos.

What a great time all of us had. Mostly because of our tours with the people you booked us with. I cant say enough about our tours, guides, drivers and vehicles...All of us were impressed with each of them and have already recommended your company to people we know who have upcoming trips to Europe. Plans are being drawn up for our next trip in 2 years..I must admit I was afraid something would go wrong, and being the one in charge of the bookings all of the blame would fall on me if one of the tours didnt show up...Well what a hoot when we got off the boat in all 3 places and there was my name on the bus....Once again thank you for all of your help

Ken Diaz the Group Reservation Manager of Private Shore Trips organized an amazing set of tourstransportation events for our group of 42 friends and family in MULTIPLE countries! Yes Italy, Greece & Turkey!! Or tour guides provided excellent connections with the entire group and gave a dissertation on the history of each location we visited. We had teachers in our group and they were impressed with the tour guides that says a lot!

All of our tours were just fantatic.  In Athens, the Acropolis was simply awesome and we had a wonderful time in the Plaka.  I wish we could have had lunch in one of those roof top bars.  That would have been awesome.  In Katakolon, the farm you recommended was so nice, peaceful and the hosts were so welcoming.  The other tours in Greece were great but those were the highlights for us.  Thank you also for telling the guide to walk slowly - my mother appreciated it.

They were super knowledgeable and friendly with professionalism. I would like to make sure they are recognized by their company for being great! P.S. you were also wonderful! You have great customer service and were always ready to assist us with any questions we may have.
