TOUR DESCRIPTION

Tallinn Upper & Lower Old Town Shore Excursion

This is the most complete Tallinn tour available, built for guests who want both the medieval capital and rural Estonia in a single port day rather than choosing between them.

The morning belongs to Tallinn's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. After meeting your guide at the pier, you drive around the city walls into Toompea, the Upper Old Town, where the layers of German, Scandinavian, and Russian influence become apparent as you walk. You pass beneath Toompea Castle, whose fortifications began in the 13th century even though its pink facade dates to the 18th, and see the onion domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built in 1900, dominating Palace Square. At the Gothic St Mary's Cathedral, the Toomkirik, you can view centuries of funeral coats of arms inside and climb the bell tower for city views, services permitting. Descending to the Lower Town, you pass the 14th century Holy Ghost Church and the 1404 Town Hall, the only surviving Gothic town hall in northern Europe, before browsing the working craft studios along Katariina Gild street.

After free time in the town square for lunch on your own (meal not included), the afternoon shifts entirely to the countryside. At Rocca al Mare, named for an 1863 summer manor, the Estonian Open Air Museum gathers nearly 80 original buildings across 72 hectares of parkland, moved here piece by piece from across the country. Your guide walks you through reconstructed farmsteads, fishing villages, 18th and 19th century windmills, and a working tavern that together illustrate roughly 300 years of Estonian rural life, a striking contrast to the morning's stone streets and church towers, before you return to the pier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a long day?
It runs about 8 hours with a mix of walking, driving, and a free lunch break in the town square, so it is full but comfortably paced rather than rushed.
Can we do just the Old Town or just the museum instead?
Yes, both are also available as their own shorter tours if you would rather not combine them in a single day.
What is the single biggest difference between the morning and afternoon?
The morning covers medieval stone architecture shaped by German, Scandinavian, and Russian rule; the afternoon covers traditional wooden Estonian rural life, a genuinely different side of the country in the same day.

Also Available:

›The Old Town of Tallinn - If a full day is more than you need, this 4-hour tour covers the same in-depth Old Town walking tour on its own.
›Tallinn Highlights and Kadriorg Palace - If an imperial palace interests you more than rural Estonia, this 5-hour tour pairs the Old Town with Kadriorg Park instead.

We had great tour. Eero was fantastic. He showed us all the sights, was very good with my dad (who had to use a wheelchair) and even helped us with a little snack at an outdoor caf. A great time!

I have been meaning to get in touch and letting you know that all private tours were right on time even though after reconfirming from the hotel in Copenhagen my German phone never worked, so I was a bit concerned how it would work out but they were all there, were professional and helpful and with the three boys it was the best decision I made about the whole trip to have the private tours. I knew this cruise would not be the perfect itinerary for teen age boys but I think the guides we had made it work, adjusted the programs tour over the city rather than the city tour as it would have given the boys a thrill and me the kind of overview of the city one could not get from a car. I dont mean it complaining, it is more hindsight on my part. I would recommend Private tours to anyone with a small group, as the flexibility and advantage of passing all the long long line ups for all the larger groups and sneaking in ahead of them was worth alone the extra cost. On top of it the flexibility was just priceless for the boys. I have less good things to say about the cruise line, found the ship not well organized and not at all helpful for anyone not wanting their tours and giving the rest of us wrong information about landing procedures at least 12 the time. Well, I have learned a lot and even though I will never be a total cruise fan, the baltic itinerary is really very informative if one prepares oneself as there was little or no advanced information on the destination ports given to us from the ship itself. So, thanks for your helpful service, I would recommend booking private tours to anyone!! You are welcome to quote my recommendation if needed.

We really enjoy all the tours that you booked for us. Really made our trip that much more enjoyable and we were able to cover a lot more ground. All the tour guides were absolutely wonderful. I will definitely refer you to anyone that is going to Europe. I just wish you covered more than Europe!
