Oslo Shore Excursion

This private Oslo shore trip explores Oslo's Maritime Past including the Vikings, Thor Heyerdahl's world famous expeditions and the polar explorers. You visit three important museums to see ships and artifacts that tell the story of Norway's close relationship with the sea.

After meeting your guide you immediately depart for Bygdoy, which is a peninsula on the western side of Oslo and home to several popular museums. A short stop is included to take photos of the famous Akershus Fortress which was built in 1290 to guard the city of Oslo.

The Viking Museum was built in the early 20th century to house some of the best preserved Viking ships ever found. Many fully intact (or near fully) ships are on display including the Gokstad Ship, the Tune Ship and the highlight, the Oseberg Ship. This particular ship is in excellent condition as it was found buried on the Oseberg farm near Tonsberg, Norway. The museum also displays unique finds from the royal graves upon which the viking ships were placed.

Next is a visit to the Kon-tiki Museum which includes original boats and exhibits from Thor Heyerdahl's world famous expeditions. Thor (1914-2002) is considered one of the world's most famous adventurers and champions of the environment. The museum is home to permanent exhibitions about: Ra, Tigris, Fatu-Hiva , Kon-Tiki, and Easter Island.

Finally you visit the Fram museum which shows the history of the polar explorers. Here you'll find the world's most famous polar ship, Fram (used from 1892 - 1912). The ship was used in explorations of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. You are able to board the ship to see the interior in its original condition.

At the end of the tour you are returned to your ship in the pier.

Mobility: Folding wheelchair OK, some sites may be inaccessible (advance notice required)
