This
private Motril tour visits Spain's Apujarras region located in the Sierra Madre mountains which are famous for dramatic valley vistas with flora unique to the area. The Moorish history of the region is evident in traditional crafts. You explore 2-3 villages in the region which is sometimes referred to as Europe's Tibet.
After meeting your tour leader in Motril, you start the drive into the mountains. Typically the first stop is the village of Pampaneira, one of the most picturesque white villages in the Poqueira Gorge. While you are here you can stroll along narrow cobbled streets, admire flower-filled balconies and visit small artisan shops
From there, your journey continues higher into the mountains to Trevélez, the highest village in Spain, at almost 5,000 feet above sea level. Trevélez is well for its traditional air-dried ham. You have time to wander through its distinct neighborhoods and enjoy the crisp mountain air. There is free time for lunch (meal not included) and we suggest a local lunch featuring local ham and other regional specialties while taking in the beautiful panoramic alpine scenery.
Later this afternoon, the tour descends to Orgiva, the lively capital of the western Alpujarras. Along the way a photo stop is often included to see the Orgiva Bridge, also known as the Puente de los Siete Ojos or Seven Eyes Bridge. This distinctive stone arch bridge crosses the Guadalfeo River and dates back to the 1400s with the current version completed in 1610.
The atmosphere in Orgiva is more bustling and bohemian, with open plazas, local markets, and cafes that invite a leisurely walk and coffee before returning to the pier.
Later this afternoon you return to Motril.
