TOUR DESCRIPTION

Alhambra & Granada Shore Excursion from Malaga / 8.5 Hours

This private Malaga shore excursion to Granada is designed for travelers who want to experience one of Spain's most extraordinary cultural treasures. Explore the world-famous Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Spain's second most visited attraction, before enjoying free time to discover Granada's historic city center, where Moorish and Christian history come together in one of Andalusia's most fascinating destinations.

After meeting your guide in Malaga, relax during the scenic drive through the Andalusian countryside as you depart for Granada. Upon arrival your tour starts at the Alhambra, one of Europe's finest examples of Islamic architecture and the last great palace of Moorish Spain. Sitting on a high ridge overlooking the city of Granada, you will marvel at this sprawling Moorish complex consisting of a fortress, multiple palaces, gardens, reflecting pools, courtyards, and forests. Throughout your visit, your guide will explain how the Nasrid rulers transformed the Alhambra into one of the world's most remarkable royal palace complexes.

For many, a highlight is the Alcazaba, which sits at the point of the ridge and affords magnificent views over all of Granada. The castle with its tower was the main stronghold of the complex. On clear days, you can also enjoy views toward the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Your visit includes the Generalife, the elegant summer palace of the Nasrid sultans, and its beautiful gardens, known for their fountains, shaded walkways, and peaceful courtyards.

Following your time at the Alhambra, you enjoy free time in Granada's historic center where you have time for lunch (meal not included). Following lunch you can explore the old town on your own or, if you wish, visit the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral of Granada, one of Spain's finest Renaissance cathedrals, known for its gold and white interior. The Gothic Royal Chapel contains the tombs of Queen Isabel and King Fernando, the Catholic Monarchs who united Spain and sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas. Another alternative is a visit to the historic Alcaicería, Granada's former Arab silk market, where traditional crafts and souvenirs are still sold today.

Later this afternoon you return to Malaga, arriving back at your cruise ship with a deeper appreciation for Granada's remarkable blend of Moorish architecture, royal history, and Andalusian culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to book Alhambra tickets ourselves in advance?
No, that's handled as part of this tour, which matters more than it might sound: Alhambra tickets, especially for the Nasrid Palaces, routinely sell out weeks or even months ahead during peak season, so booking your own last-minute wouldn't be realistic. Because of that, we'd recommend reserving this tour as early as possible once your cruise dates are set.
How long is the drive from Malaga to Granada?
About 1.5 to 2 hours each way, which is why this is a longer 8.5-hour day; it needs to account for travel time on both ends plus a proper visit to the Alhambra complex.
What's the difference between the Alcazaba and the Generalife?
The Alcazaba is the old fortress at the point of the ridge, with the best panoramic views over Granada. The Generalife was the sultans' summer palace, known for its gardens and reflecting pools. Both are included in your Alhambra visit.
Do we also see the Cathedral and Royal Chapel?
That's optional and tas time permits. After the Alhambra and some free time in Granada's old town for lunch, your guide can include a visit to the Royal Chapel and Cathedral.
Is this tour private, and will we be back for our ship's departure?
Yes, it's private with a licensed guide, and given the distance from Granada back to Malaga, you're covered by our Back-to-Ship Guarantee if you return 1.5 hours prior to ship depature.

My friends and I have returned from our trip to Spain, and I just wanted to drop this note to thank you for all your help in setting up our shore excursions. We had a wonderful time on our vacation, and all the tours which we booked through Private Shore Trips were fantastic.  They were on point with their communication and we never had any problems finding our tour guides. The guides were also very friendly and knowledgeable. The transportation vehicles which were assigned to our group were very comfortable as well. I highly recommend your company to anyone who is interested in setting up a shore excursion.
