This private tour starts in London and visits Dover Castle before ending at the Dover cruise port, both on the same stretch of coastline overlooking the English Channel.
After meeting your guide at your London hotel, you depart for Dover Castle, long nicknamed the Key to England for its position guarding the shortest sea crossing to mainland Europe. The castle has been fortified for more than 2,000 years, and its Great Tower, built under Henry II in the 1180s, remains one of the best preserved of its kind in the country.
The castle has been tested by siege more than once. In 1216, during the First Barons' War, Prince Louis of France laid siege to Dover Castle for months, and its defenders held out under the command of Hubert de Burgh, a resistance credited with helping turn the tide of the war against French invasion.
Centuries later, the castle's tunnels took on a new role. First expanded in the late 18th century to house troops during the Napoleonic Wars, they were reactivated in 1939 and became the nerve center for Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk in 1940. Vice-Admiral Bertram Ramsay ran the entire nine-day operation from these tunnels, helping rescue over 338,000 soldiers from the beaches of France.
In the Great Tower, you find yourself in the royal court of Henry II, with interactive displays and, on some days, costumed characters, a highlight for younger visitors.
After the castle, you have free time in Dover for lunch (meal not included) before continuing to the cruise pier.
