Dover Castle has been fortified for more than 2,000 years, from Iron Age earthworks through a Roman lighthouse that still stands on the site, a Saxon church, and the Norman Great Tower built under Henry II in the 1180s. Your visit covers the castle's dramatic history from the 13th century through the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, including the Secret Wartime Tunnels, once a nerve center for anti-aircraft operations and later prepared as an underground command post for the British government in the event of nuclear war.
In the Great Tower, you step into the royal court of Henry II, with interactive displays and, on some days, costumed characters, a highlight for younger visitors.
After the castle, you have free time in Dover for lunch (meal not included) before the drive to Heathrow Airport.
