This Budapest day trip visits the UNESCO World Heritage village of Holloko, inscribed in 1987 as one of the best preserved examples of traditional Palóc folk architecture in Hungary.
Your guide meets you at your Budapest hotel or Danube river cruise ship, and you depart directly for the village, located about 56 miles (90km) north of Budapest, roughly a 1.5 hour drive. Once you arrive, your guide leads you through this Palóc ethnographic village, built mostly in the 17th and 18th centuries after an earlier fire. You walk along narrow streets past traditional rural Hungarian houses, with their stepped gable roofs and carved wooden porches, and quickly understand why this small village draws visitors from around the world.
At the western edge of the village lie castle ruins dating to the 13th century, which your guide uses to explain the history of the people who have lived here. From the hill above the village you get good photos looking down over Holloko's rooftops. After visiting the Village Museum and the castle, there is free time for lunch before you head back to Budapest.
