Argostoli Shore Excursion

This Argostoli shore trip visits Drogarati Cave, which is one of the most impressive on the island. Also included is a boat ride on the Cave Lake of Melissani and the resort town of Sami.

After meeting your guide at the port of Argostoli you start the drive up the slopes of Mount Ainos towards the Cave of Drogarati. During the drive you pass the famous bridge of Drapanos with its obelisk. You also pass by the traditional village of Fragata with its vineyards. The cave itself is one of the most impressive on the island, lying 180 feet below the surface and dating more than 2 million years old. Its stalagmites and stalactites, soak up the mineral components of the rocks like iron, copper, salt, calcium and give them the most amazing colors and formations.

You will descend a steep corridor into the cave which ultimately leads to a natural balcony overlooking a platform which is approximately 2700 square feet in size and because its ideal acoustics it is often used as a venue for concerts.

Next you take the coastal road to the Cave Lake of Melissani. When you arrive at the lake you walk a short distance down a tunnel which leads to the beautiful underground lake. You board small wooden boats for the short trip around the lake and the surrounding caves.

The tour then continues to the coastal summer resort of Sami on the northeastern shores of the island. Here, you have some free time to relax in one of the traditional coffee shops, sample local wines and enjoy a walk around the old port for some souvenir shopping.

At the end of your excursion you return to the pier in Argostoli.

Please Note: The Drogarati Cave is about 180 feet below the surface. The entrance is via a steep staircase carved out of the rocks. The interior of the cave corridors can be steep and slippery because of the moisture. The temperature in the cave is approximately 64 degrees so dress accordingly. There are about 200 steps (up & down) so this tour is not advisable for people with walking or breathing difficulties.
