TOUR DESCRIPTION

Assisi & Basilica of St. Francis Shore Excursion from Ancona / 8 Hours

This Ancona shore excursion visits the historic hilltop town of Assisi, known for one of its most famous residents, St. Francis, who was born here in 1182. On this private tour from Ancona, you enjoy a guided walking tour of Assisi with a visit to the Basilica of St. Francis, and also some free time.

Getting to Assisi
You meet your driver at the pier in Ancona and start the journey to Assisi, located in the Umbria region. The drive takes a little under two hours each way. Assisi is a small medieval hilltop town with a population of about 25,000, built into the slopes of Mount Subasio.

Your Walking Tour of Assisi
Upon arrival in Assisi, you are joined by a licensed local tour guide who provides your private group a walking tour of the town. You will pass through Assisi's medieval streets and piazzas, with views over the Umbrian countryside, as your guide explains the town's history and its connection to St. Francis.

Visiting the Basilica of St. Francis
A highlight of the tour is a visit to the beautiful Basilica of St. Francis, with entrance included in this tour. This massive two level church was consecrated in the year 1253. The frescoes from the 13th century depict the life of the town's patron saint, St. Francis, and are considered some of the most important religious artwork in Italy. Your guide provides detailed descriptions throughout the visit.

Free Time in Assisi
After the walking tour and visit to the basilica, you have free time for lunch and some shopping or self exploration. Many guests use this time to try local Umbrian dishes or browse shops along Assisi's main streets. Your guide will then get you back to your vehicle for the journey back to the pier in Ancona.

Ken Diaz the Group Reservation Manager of Private Shore Trips organized an amazing set of tourstransportation events for our group of 42 friends and family in MULTIPLE countries! Yes Italy, Greece & Turkey!! Or tour guides provided excellent connections with the entire group and gave a dissertation on the history of each location we visited. We had teachers in our group and they were impressed with the tour guides that says a lot!
