This Zeebrugge shore excursion includes the highlights of both Ghent and Bruges. During your tour in Bruges you will enjoy samples of local foods which will make for a light lunch. In Ghent you enjoy a walking tour and a visit to the famous Van Eyck Altar Piece.
Your day starts with the short drive to Bruges where you begin 4 hour walking tour with stops to sample local foods.
The highlight of any visit to Bruges is the Market Square and your tour will start here. The iconic Market Square has been used as a market place since the year 958 AD. The square is filled with Gothic Revival buildings, a 250 foot tall bell tower, the famous Burg, rows of stepped facades and outdoor caf̩es serving Belgian specialties and beer. Your tour guide will provide detailed explanations about this beautiful square and its historic buildings. The square was pedestrianized in 1996 and has since become one of the most beautiful squares in all of Europe.
A stop to enjoy a local beer and some local sausages is included in the walking tour, giving you another taste of Bruges. At another stop you will enjoy the local Fries which are quite famous.
You will visit the church of Saint-Anne to see its beautiful baroque interior. Some of the other areas visited include the Huydevetters square and the Burg square which are also filled with historic buildings. You will enjoy a short visit to the fish market and then walk along the Dijver as you learn about some of the most important museums in the city.
Before finishing your walking tour there is also a stop at one of the very best Chocolate shops in the city. Of course you are given the chance to sample them. You may think you have tasted good chocolates before, but fresh chocolates are much better than boxed.
Next you drive to Ghent where you will enjoy a short walking tour through the historic center followed by a visit to the gothic Cathedral of Saint Baaf.
You see the Old Harbor with its Guild Houses and St. Michael's Church. It is by far the most photogenic spot in town. You continue your walk in the "Kuip" or heart of the old city where many beautiful buildings are seen at each corner. In the heart of Ghent you see the Gothic Belfry Tower which dates from 1425. Almost as impressive is the Town Hall, which is a mix of architectural styles due to the various centuries through which it was built.
Later you visit the highlight of Ghent, the gothic Cathedral of Saint Baaf. The cathedral is a living museum of sculpture, carvings, wrought iron work and art. The most important painting is "The Adoration of the Lamb of God" by the Van Eyck brothers. Your guide will provide descriptions of the many scenes in this triptych.
At the end of the tour you are brought back to the pier inn Zeebrugge.
