This private Vigo shore excursion visits two towns, Baiona in Spain at the edge of Vigo Bay, and Valenca do Minho in Portugal, on the river that forms the border between the two countries. Along the way you also stop at Mount Santa Tecla for views into both countries and see a few highlights of Vigo.
Visiting Baiona
After meeting your driver guide at the pier in Vigo, you depart for Baiona, a town dating back to 140 BC. On March 1, 1493, one of Columbus' ships, the Pinta, arrived here, making Baiona the first town in Europe to receive news of the New World. Today Baiona is a fishing village popular with summer visitors. You walk through the Baiona Old Quarter, with its winding cobblestone streets, and see the cloistered Convent of the Dominicas, the Misericordia Chapel, and Casa Lorenzo Correa, which serves as Baiona's Town Hall. The Monterreal Fortress, a walled enclosure built beginning in the 12th century and completed over roughly four centuries, now contains a hotel built in the style of a Galician manor house.
Mount Santa Tecla
From Baiona, you drive along the coast of Galicia to A Guardia, near the Portuguese border, to visit Mount Santa Tecla. On the way to the summit, you stop at an Iron Age settlement. From the top, you have views of the sea and into both Spain and Portugal.
Valenca do Minho, Portugal
You then visit Valenca do Minho, a Portuguese town with streets of shops selling pottery, linen and crockery. You cross the Minho River, which forms the border between Spain and Portugal, and have free time to wander the town before returning to Vigo.
