This full day Venice shore trip explores Verona's historic city center, including its Roman era Arena, before turning in the afternoon to the story and sights of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
You will be met at the pier in Venice by your private English speaking driver, who takes you to Verona, one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire in northern Italy. Upon arrival you meet your licensed city guide for a panoramic driving tour past the Renaissance city gates, the Scaliger Bridge and Castle, built by Verona's ruling Della Scala family in the 14th century, the Roman Gavi Arch, the Roman gate known as Porta Borsari, dating to the 1st century AD, a surviving Roman bridge, and several historic churches.
From there you walk through Piazza Bra to the Roman Arena, built around 30 AD and among the best preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. It originally held an estimated 30,000 spectators for gladiator contests and public events, and today it still hosts a major open-air opera festival each summer. Nearby cafes and restaurants give you free time on your own for lunch and shopping.
In the afternoon your guide returns to walk you through the sites tied to Romeo and Juliet. You see Romeo's house and the Carlotti Palace, said to be the site of the duel between Romeo and Tybalt, and stop at a bust of Shakespeare along Pallone Street. The story has real Verona roots, first written as a 1530 novella before Shakespeare adapted it decades later. The highlight is Juliet's balcony, part of a 13th century Gothic house, with the bronze statue of Juliet below it. If time allows, you can visit the museum inside Juliet's house.
At the end of your tour, your driver returns you to the pier in Venice.
