Romeo and Juliet's Verona

This private Venice shore trip visits Verona so you can learn the story and see the sights of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the most famous love story in the world.

You will be met at the pier in Venice by your private English speaking driver, who takes you to Verona, a city with roots in the Roman Empire and a stop on Dante Alighieri's own path into exile in the early 1300s, part of the journey that shaped the Divine Comedy. Upon arrival you meet your licensed city guide for a private walking tour.

You visit the Herb and Gentlemen's Squares to set the historical period of Romeo and Juliet, then see Romeo's house and the Carlotti Palace, said to be the site of the duel between Romeo and Tybalt. Along Pallone Street you stop at a bust of Shakespeare. The story itself has real roots in Verona history, first told as a novella by Luigi da Porto in 1530, later retold by Matteo Bandello, before Shakespeare adapted it into his 1597 play. The Montecchi and Capuleti families Dante references in the Divine Comedy are widely considered the historical inspiration for the Montagues and Capulets.

The highlight of the tour is Juliet's balcony, a stone balcony that is part of a 13th century house built in Gothic style. Below it stands the bronze statue of Juliet, where visitors traditionally leave a love note or touch the statue for good luck. You then visit the museum inside Juliet's house, furnished in period style.

Before leaving Verona, you stop at Piazza Bra for photos of the Roman Arena, which sits near the city's main Roman gate. At the end of your tour, your driver returns you to the pier in Venice.
