This half day Valencia highlights tour takes you through the architectural heritage of Spain's third largest city, with styles ranging from ancient Roman to Art Nouveau and ultra modern. You enjoy photo stops at many of the city's must see sights on this private Valencia shore excursion.
After meeting your guide, you start with a photo stop at one of the contemporary works of Santiago Calatrava, the City of Arts and Sciences. This futuristic educational complex houses Oceanografic, Europe's largest aquarium, along with a science museum, an opera house, an IMAX cinema, and much more. The complex is also known as the City of the 21st Century.
Next you enjoy a ride through the Turia Gardens, a lush oasis laid out in the old riverbed of the Turia River. Once you are in the heart of the city you see the Plaza de la Reina, where you discover Valencia's religious quarter. Valencia Cathedral was built over the site of a former mosque, itself built over an earlier Visigothic cathedral, with construction of the current building beginning in 1262. You will see styles ranging from Gothic to Romanesque and Baroque. The octagonal Miguelete Tower, the cathedral's bell tower, was built later, in the late 14th and early 15th centuries.
Before the tour is complete you see the Gothic Lonja, the Silk Exchange, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Close by is the city's central market, housed in an Art Nouveau building and considered one of the largest markets in Europe. At the end of the tour you are brought back to the pier.
Option: if you are interested, it is possible to include a stop at the Lladro Porcelain Factory. The factory was founded by a family in 1953 and became one of the most famous Valencian companies in the world, thanks to their exquisite porcelain figures. Including this stop will make the other photo stops more brief.
