Diocletian's Palace & Trogir Shore Excursion from Split

This private shore excursion combines the two signature sights of the Split region in a single half day: Diocletian's Palace in the heart of Split and the medieval town of Trogir along the Dalmatian coast.

The tour begins at Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built as a retirement residence for the Roman Emperor Diocletian around 295 to 305 AD and still one of the best preserved examples of Roman residential architecture in the world. Your guide leads you through the vaulted substructures that supported the imperial residence above, then into the peristyle, the palace's colonnaded ceremonial courtyard. You also visit the Cathedral of St. Domnius, originally Diocletian's mausoleum and now among the oldest buildings anywhere still in use as a cathedral. Afterward you have a short amount of free time to explore the maze of streets inside the palace walls.

From Split, you drive about 17 miles (27km) along the coast to Trogir, a town built on a small islet and developed mainly between the 13th and 15th centuries, whose historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Your guide walks you through Trogir's narrow stone streets to St. Lawrence Cathedral, home to the celebrated west portal carved by the sculptor Radovan in 1240, considered one of the finest works of Romanesque sculpture on the Adriatic coast.

After the walking tour, you have free time in Trogir's old town before returning to Split.
