Savona Shore Excursion - This private shore trip allows visitors to explore Savona, known for being the home town of two very important Popes during the Italian Renaissance. You visit the "Little Sistine Chapel", enjoy a walking tour of the medieval old town and also visit a local pottery factory in nearby Albisola.

After meeting your guide you immediately drive to nearby Albisola which has been one of the most prestigious pottery centers in Italy since the 16th century. You'll visit an old pottery factory to see the artisans working at the potter's wheel, as well as the baking and decoration phases, of these lovely objects.

Next you return to Savona which is the home town of the two most important Popes during the Italian Renaissance; Pope Sistus IV ordered the famous Sistine Chapel in Rome to be built, and his nephew Julius II was Michelangelo' s patron. A third Pope from Savona, Pius VII, was a prisoner of Napoleon's in the Bishop's palace from 1809 until 1814.

During your tour you visit the Medieval heart of Savona including Via Pia, a street lined with the Palaces of rich merchants and the aristocracy. Your guide will point out the fine portals and loggias of these palaces which are made of black slate.

A highlight for many visitors is a visit to the Cathedral where you see the famous choir which was ordered by Julius II at the beginning of the 16th century. A 19th century cloister connects the cathedral to the Little Sistine Chapel which was built by Pope Sistus IV during the late 15th century as a mausoleum for his parents.

During your walking tour you also have the chance to taste some of the Savonese specialties such as chinotti (candy oranges in maraschino liquor) and amaretti (cakes with bitter and sweet almonds). If time is available you enjoy a short amount of free time before returning to the pier.
