TOUR DESCRIPTION

Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Shore Excursion from Civitavecchia

This full-day private shore excursion from Civitavecchia focuses on the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, with VIP skip-the-line access, followed by a driving tour of Rome's most celebrated landmarks. Your driver guide meets you at the pier in Civitavecchia and drives you directly to Vatican City, approximately 90 minutes away. An early departure of 8:00 to 8:30 AM is strongly recommended to make the most of your time.

At the Vatican, your private licensed guide meets you at the entrance and leads your group through the museum complex with reserved VIP access, bypassing the standard entry queues. The Vatican Museums house one of the world's greatest art collections, assembled over five centuries by the papacy. The gallery sequence moves through ancient sculpture, the Gallery of Maps, and the Raphael Rooms before arriving at the Sistine Chapel. The chapel's ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, depicts scenes from the Book of Genesis including the Creation of Adam. The altar wall features The Last Judgment, completed by Michelangelo nearly three decades later. After the museum tour, you have time for exterior photographs of St. Peter's Basilica from the square.

Leaving Vatican City, your driver guide takes you past Castel Sant'Angelo, the cylindrical fortress on the bank of the Tiber River, originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD and later converted into a papal fortress and prison.

Your next stop is Piazza Navona, the elegant Baroque square built on the foundations of a Roman stadium. Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers dominates the center, flanked by two smaller fountains and surrounded by cafes and restaurants. You have free time here for lunch at your own expense.

From Piazza Navona, your driver guide takes you on a driving tour of Rome's major landmarks with photo stops. You see the exterior of the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and a vantage point overlooking the Roman Forum. Your final stop is the Trevi Fountain, followed by a drive past the Pantheon before returning to Civitavecchia in the late afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's actually included with the 'VIP' Vatican tickets?
Skip-the-line entry. Instead of waiting in the general admission queue, which can run over an hour at busy times, you go straight in with your licensed Vatican guide for a 3-hour tour of the museum complex and Sistine Chapel.
How old was Michelangelo when he painted the Sistine Chapel?
He was in his 30s when he finished the ceiling frescoes, including the Creation of Adam, in 1512, and came back decades later in his 60s to paint the Last Judgment on the altar wall between 1536 and 1541. Seeing both in one room, painted more than two decades apart, is one of the things your guide will point out.
Can I take photos inside the Sistine Chapel?
No, photography and filming are prohibited inside the Sistine Chapel, and visitors are asked to stay silent out of respect for the space. You're welcome to photograph the rest of the Vatican Museums complex for personal use.
Does this tour still include the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, or is it Vatican-only?
Both. After your Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel visit, the afternoon covers Rome's classic sites, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon, so you get the Vatican's art alongside ancient Rome in the same day.
What's the dress code for the Vatican Museums?
Shoulders and knees must be covered for everyone in your party; no sleeveless tops, shorts above the knee, or short skirts. It's strictly enforced at security, so plan your outfit (or bring a light cover-up) before you go.

Yes, the tour went really well. They raved about the tour guide and said she was very knowledgeable. The only thing they would have liked was to eat lunch earlier, but they loved the restaurant that she took them too and were treated exceptionally well by the staff there. Thanks for all your help with this booking I will be sure to call you the next time I need a private tour!

We had a fantastic experience with our driver and guide Luca on a private tour of Rome. Luca was friendly, informative and made the most of our short time in Rome. The entire family enjoyed him. Weve been on many private tours and Luca was the best we can ever remember. We highly recommend him.

We worked with Ken and he organized a full day private tour of Rome. What an amazing time! Our driver Luca was exceptional in making us feel part of his family. Our private Vatican guide Al was personable and made sure our tour was informative and fun. He knew every inch of the museums and shortcuts to get close to attractions, unlike larger tours. Luca took us to a restaurant for lunch..the food was amazing. After the

I just wanted to thank you, again, for assisting us with our private tours in France and Italy! We had the most wonderful visits and I want to specifically say how great the tour guidesdrivers were. We enjoyed spending the day(s) with all of them and would recommend your company, and those specific guides, to anyone traveling to those locations. They helped in making our first trip to Nice and (3 ports in) Italy very memorable! Weve been home a week and cant stop talking about our trip...Im not sure we will! Merci... Grazie... Thank you
