TOUR DESCRIPTION

Stirling Castle and Falkirk Wheel

This full day shore excursion from Greenock, about 50 miles (80km) away, pairs a visit to Stirling Castle with a boat ride on the Falkirk Wheel.

After meeting your driver-guide at the pier, you drive to Stirling Castle, built on a volcanic crag that made it one of the most fought-over strongholds during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 1300s. The castle later served as a royal residence, and King James V built its Renaissance style Royal Palace in the 1530s and 1540s. You then have free time for lunch in Stirling's old town, often ranked among Scotland's finest small heritage towns.

In the afternoon, you drive to Falkirk to visit the Falkirk Wheel, opened in 2002 as the centerpiece of the 84.5 million pound Millennium Link project that reconnected the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal after both had fallen out of use. The wheel lifts boats about 79 feet (24m) in a single rotation that takes around 15 minutes. Your boat trip departs from the Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre, sails up through the lift onto the Union Canal, then passes beneath the Antonine Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site marking the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, before returning to the basin.

Following the boat trip, you return to the pier in Greenock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Antonine Wall and why does it matter here?
The Antonine Wall was the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain, built around 142 AD under Emperor Antoninus Pius. It runs near the Falkirk Wheel and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing the Frontiers of the Roman Empire.
Why was the Falkirk Wheel built instead of a traditional lock system?
Engineers chose a rotating boat lift because the Union Canal sits about 79 feet (24m) higher than the Forth and Clyde Canal at that point, a height difference that would have required an impractical string of 11 traditional locks. The wheel moves boats between the two canals in a single continuous motion.
Is the boat ride on the Falkirk Wheel included in the tour price?
Yes, the boat ride is included in the cost of this tour.
Is lunch included?
Lunch is not included, but you have free time in Stirling to choose a pub or restaurant and pay for your own meal.

Also Available:

›Highlights of Edinburgh - A full day tour to Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, with free time for lunch in Scotland's capital.
›Stirling Castle - The half day version of this same castle visit, without the afternoon Falkirk Wheel boat ride.

We had a fantastic time! Our guides were great, and had a terrific personality. He was also quite the historian!!! We saw more in one day than anyone else on the ship. I will tell all my clients to contact your company. I could not be happier!!! Heres to next time.

Ken organized an excellent excursion for our group of 16 from Regal Princess cruise stop in Glasgow (Greenock). Our tour guides (we had two eight seater vehicles) were very knowledgeable, friendly and ensured that we all had a great time while visiting Loch Lomond, Luss, Aberfoyle, etc. Every one of our group thoroughly enjoyed themselves! celebrating birthdays that week, we broke out into impromptu choruses of Happy Birthday. All in all, we can confidently say that our London visit was very much enhanced by the outstanding guide we had ---- never underestimate when someone says that a tour guide can make or break your experience. Konrad is tops!

Again, Private Shore Trips did not disappoint. Been using them since 2009. Steven is so great to work with - and his team of tour guides all over Europe have been amazing. This time we used them in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. David in London, Ricky in Edinburgh, Ricky and Graeme in Glasgow and Paul in Belfast. All were personable, friendly, very knowledgeable, and flexible.

I just wanted to commend you on a job very well done on our cruise vacation excursions. All the drivers and guides were really excellent and we got to see much more than the people on the big bus tours. We will certainly recommend your service to others.
