TOUR DESCRIPTION

County Kerry Scenic Shore Excursion from Cork

This Cork shore excursion travels from Cobh to County Kerry, the scenic center of tourism in Ireland and part of the famous Ring of Kerry driving route. If your ideal day combines dramatic Irish landscapes with small local villages, this is the tour for you.

After meeting your private driver-guide, you begin the drive to County Kerry in the extreme southwest of Ireland. Kerry is traditionally known as the Kingdom and has two contrasting types of terrain: a mountainous south with small peninsulas jutting into the sea, and smaller plains stretching north to the Shannon estuary. Wherever you approach from, the central spine of the Kerry mountains draws you in, and the fretted coastline and deep bays of the Atlantic constantly change the light and texture of the landscape.

Your first stop is Kenmare, whose name in Irish, Neidin, means "little nest," a reference to its setting between the mountains and the sea. Kenmare is an important example of a planned town, laid out on an X-plan by the first Marquess of Lansdowne in 1775, with a wide main street and square. Set on the Ring of Kerry, it is known today as an attractive tourist town with fine restaurants and craft shops, and it retains links to a more ancient past through its Bronze Age stone circle of 15 standing stones, once a burial place and site of sun worship.

Next are photo stops at Ladies View and Moll's Gap. Moll's Gap is a well known viewpoint on the Ring of Kerry, offering a view over Black Valley and the Lakes of Killarney surrounded by the Kerry mountains. Ladies View, a different perspective on the same countryside, takes its name from Queen Victoria, who was so taken with the view that she insisted her ladies-in-waiting see it too.

You then continue into the town of Killarney, where you have free time for lunch, meal not included, at a traditional Irish pub. Afterward you relax with a jaunting car, a horse drawn carriage, through Killarney National Park. Your driver, known locally as a jarvey, takes you through the park's scenery to spots you might not otherwise see on your own. The park became Ireland's first national park in 1932, when the Muckross Estate was presented to the nation by Senator Arthur Vincent. Today the park covers more than 26,000 acres of mountain, moorland, woodland, and waterways.

After your visit to the park, you return to the pier in Cobh.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is County Kerry from the Cobh cruise port?
It's about a 2 hour scenic drive each way from Cobh into County Kerry, with roughly 4.5 hours on the ground in Kenmare, Killarney, and Killarney National Park.
What is a jaunting car?
A jaunting car is a traditional Irish horse drawn carriage. Your driver, called a Jarvey, takes you through Killarney National Park on a route not accessible by regular vehicle.
How old is Kenmare, and where does its name come from?
Kenmare was laid out as a planned town in 1775 by the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne. Its Irish name, Neidin, means "little nest," a reference to its setting between the mountains and the sea.
Where should I look for my driver after disembarking in Cork?
Cruise Ship: When you get off the ship in Cork, look for the terminal's main public exit. If a terminal building is present, go through arrivals to the outdoor pickup area -- cruise staff will help direct you. If not, your driver will be waiting right on the dock. Can't find your contact? Stay near where you exited and call the local dispatch number on your confirmation. Hotel: Look for your driver or guide right outside the main entrance or in the lobby -- they'll be holding a sign with your group name. Airport: Once you've collected your luggage and cleared customs, head into the arrivals hall -- your driver or guide will be there holding a sign with your group name.
What happens if I need to cancel after entrance tickets are purchased for Cork?
You'll find entrance fees bundled in for Cork tours where the tour page states it. Keep in mind some venues require timed, skip-the-line tickets that become non-refundable the moment they're purchased. We'll flag any non-refundable entrance fees for you at booking.
Can we skip part of the Cork tour to spend more time somewhere else?
That's the advantage of going private in Cork -- the day can adjust to you. Mention any must-see sight to your driver or guide at pickup, and they'll do their best to work it in. Traffic and time constraints can occasionally limit how much we can change, but your guide will always try to keep things personal.

Our tour guide Maria in Belfast and Ronni in Cork were waiting for us at the dock and we quickly boarded the vans and started our wonderful tours in ireland. Our guides were very knowledgeable and flexible allowing us to stop and take photos at highlighted points of interest. Although we could have seen more of the country our group decided that a great lunch was in order so Maria called and made us a reservation at a wonderful restaurant in belfast. There we enjoyed a excellent meal and shopping.

Just returned from London yesterday. Just wanted to let you know that all went well and the guides were outstanding. Had a fabulous time and looking forward to working with you again. The guides were very professional and on time. One was 30 minutes late, but we forgave him... He turned out to be a very good guide. I think it was in Belfast. Leaving for Honolulu for the month of August Wed, so have a lot to do before that date. Thanks again.

The group enjoyed the shore excursions very much. The tours guides were good, responsible and on time. Vehicles were also comfortable and not too cramped.   Will definitely be contacting you for my next cruise on Crystal leaving Barcelona on  October 2027.
