TOUR DESCRIPTION

Blarney Castle & Stone Shore Excursion from Cork

This Cork shore excursion visits Blarney Castle, one of the most famous sites in Ireland. Tradition holds that those willing to kiss the Blarney Stone receive the gift of eloquence. You also have the chance to visit a local shop housed in a former woolen mill and specializing in traditional Irish crafts.

After meeting your driver guide, you depart for Blarney Castle, whose keep dates from 1446 and stands on solid limestone. Much of the surrounding castle complex is ruined, but the main tower remains intact. There are 127 steps to the top of the tower, where you take in views across the surrounding countryside.

For many visitors, strolling the gardens is the best part of a visit to the castle. You will likely feel compelled to kiss the Blarney Stone and gain the gift of eloquence, or as an 18th century French consul put it, "the privilege of telling lies for seven years." What most visitors are surprised to learn is that to kiss the stone, you are held by the feet and suspended backwards over the castle wall.

Depending on your interests at the castle, you may have time to drive into Blarney village to visit the Blarney Woolen Mills. This local shop, set in an old woolen mill, specializes in quality Irish goods such as crystal, linen, china, and pottery. After time to explore the shop, you return to the pier in Cobh.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, our Cork shore excursions can also be customized to fit your needs. If you have a larger group, we can offer you a private Cork tour using a mid-size bus or full size coach. Please contact us with any questions or to receive a customized quote.

Please note
  • Due to the 127 narrow, worn stone steps to the top of Blarney Castle's tower, this stop is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs or with limited mobility. Please contact us for alternative sightseeing options, including private driving tours that may better accommodate your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is climbing to the Blarney Stone required to visit the castle?
No. The castle grounds and gardens can be enjoyed without climbing the tower, though reaching the Blarney Stone itself does require the 127 step climb.
How much free time is included at Blarney village?
Depending on the pace of your castle visit, you typically have some time at the Blarney Woolen Mills shop in the village before returning to the pier.
How old is Blarney Castle?
The current keep dates from 1446, built by Cormac MacCarthy on solid limestone. An earlier timber and then stone structure stood on the same site from around 1210.
Why do people kiss the Blarney Stone?
Tradition holds that kissing the stone grants the gift of eloquence. To do so, guests are held by the feet and lowered backwards over the castle wall, a custom that dates back centuries.
Do I need to pay separately for admission tickets on my Cork tour?
Wherever the Cork tour page indicates it, admission is already built into the price. Keep in mind some venues require timed, skip-the-line tickets that become non-refundable the moment they're purchased. We'll flag any non-refundable entrance fees for you at booking.
Can we add a stop to our Cork tour that isn't on the standard itinerary?
A private Cork tour is built to flex around what you want to see. Mention any must-see sight to your driver or guide at pickup, and they'll do their best to work it in. Traffic and time constraints can occasionally limit how much we can change, but your guide will always try to keep things personal.

Our tour guide Maria in Belfast and Ronni in Cork were waiting for us at the dock and we quickly boarded the vans and started our wonderful tours in ireland. Our guides were very knowledgeable and flexible allowing us to stop and take photos at highlighted points of interest. Although we could have seen more of the country our group decided that a great lunch was in order so Maria called and made us a reservation at a wonderful restaurant in belfast. There we enjoyed a excellent meal and shopping.

Just returned from London yesterday. Just wanted to let you know that all went well and the guides were outstanding. Had a fabulous time and looking forward to working with you again. The guides were very professional and on time. One was 30 minutes late, but we forgave him... He turned out to be a very good guide. I think it was in Belfast. Leaving for Honolulu for the month of August Wed, so have a lot to do before that date. Thanks again.

The group enjoyed the shore excursions very much. The tours guides were good, responsible and on time. Vehicles were also comfortable and not too cramped.   Will definitely be contacting you for my next cruise on Crystal leaving Barcelona on  October 2027.
