This private Belfast shore trip pairs the city's main landmarks with Mount Stewart House and Gardens, about 15 miles (24km) from Belfast, making it the most popular full-day option for first time visitors.
Your morning starts with a driving tour past Belfast's landmark sites, including the leaning Albert Memorial Clock Tower, the Grand Opera House, City Hall with its Titanic Memorial, the Crown Bar, dating from 1885, and Queens University. Depending on your interests, you may also pass the Harland and Wolff Shipyard, where the Titanic was built, or the Shankill and Falls Road. You stop briefly at the Botanic Gardens, home to the 1839 Palm House and the 1889 Tropical Ravine, before free time for lunch, with your guide happy to recommend a typical pub.
In the afternoon you drive out through the countryside to Mount Stewart House and Gardens, the 18th century home of the Marquess of Londonderry, now in the care of the National Trust. The house retains much of its original plasterwork, marble sculpture, and artwork, but the real draw is the 85 acres of gardens, largely laid out in the early 1900s by Edith, Lady Londonderry. In late spring the Sunken Garden blazes with orange and yellow azaleas, and the Shamrock Garden's scarlet Red Hand of Ulster blooms are just as striking, while in high summer the Italian Garden comes into its own with roses and herbaceous borders. Other highlights include the Dodo Terrace, with its unusual concrete animal statues, a lake, and the Temple of the Winds, designed by James Athenian Stuart in 1785. After your visit, you return to the pier in Belfast.
