TOUR DESCRIPTION

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Shore Excursion

This full-day shore excursion from Amalfi focuses on the scenery of the Amalfi Coast and the resort town of Sorrento.

After meeting your driver-guide, you have time to explore Amalfi before setting out along the coast. The town's cathedral, dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle, sits at the top of a long staircase overlooking the main square, its bronze doors cast in Constantinople in 1057 and donated by a wealthy Amalfi merchant trading there. Below the cathedral, a crypt built in 1203 holds relics of Saint Andrew himself, brought to Amalfi from Constantinople in 1208 during the Fourth Crusade. Look also for the Oriental influences in the town's architecture, striped stonework and interlacing arches that reflect Amalfi's centuries of trade across the Mediterranean.

From Amalfi, you follow the coast road toward Positano, one of dozens of hairpin turns along a route carved into cliffs that plunge dramatically to the sea. In Positano, you have free time among the shop and cafe lined stairways leading down to the beach, with views out to the Li Galli islands. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta here holds the Black Virgin, a Byzantine icon dated to the 13th century.

In the afternoon, you continue to Sorrento, a resort town on the Gulf of Naples. Though not technically part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is the traditional gateway to the region for most visitors. You have free time to wander the pedestrian lanes of the old town, lined with cafes and shops selling limoncello, the lemon liqueur made from citrus grown in the area's mild climate, along with lemon flavored ice creams and candies.

Afterward, you return to Amalfi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tour visit Pompeii?
No. This tour focuses on the coastal scenery of the Amalfi Coast, with stops in Positano and Sorrento. If you would also like to visit Pompeii, ask about our Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour, which combines the same coastal drive with a guided visit to the archaeological site.
Do we have to tender in at Amalfi, and how does that affect pickup?
Yes. Amalfi has no deep water pier for large cruise ships, so vessels anchor offshore and tender passengers into the town's marina. Your driver guide will meet you at the tender pier in Amalfi, or at your hotel if you are staying in the area rather than arriving by ship.
Whose relics are kept in the crypt of Amalfi's Cathedral?
Constantinople
What is the Black Madonna in Positano's Church of Santa Maria Assunta?
It is a Byzantine icon known as the Black Madonna, dated to around the 13th century and displayed above the church's high altar. Local legend ties its arrival to Saracen pirates and the cry of "Posa, posa," which some say gave Positano its name.

We had a wonderful vacation. Every one of the tour guides were great. My family was really impressed with their knowledge, service, and friendliness. I was pleasantly surprised with how much better an experience we had compared to the Princess Cruise Ship Tours. For example, our tour guide for the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii knew that Pompeii was closed until 1130 AM and changed our itinerary to travel along the coast in the morning and go to Pompeii at the end of the day. The other tours just took people to the gate and waited for two hours. Thanks again. My wife and kids felt that each guide was a   friend   by the end of the tour. The guides in Florence and Ephesus were probably the highlight for us. The Mercedes vans that were used in most cities were always nice and all of our drivers were really great. Ive already recommended you to a friend.
