TOUR DESCRIPTION

Knossos Palace & Heraklion Museum Shore Excursion from Agios Nikolaos

This is the best Agios Nikolaos shore trip for guests interested in antiquities. In addition to the archaeological site of Knossos, you visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where the finds from Minoan sites across the island are gathered, followed by free time in the capital city of Heraklion for lunch or shopping.

Your privately guided tour first takes you through the ruins of the ancient palace complex, which served as the administrative and religious center for the whole region. Knossos was the capital of the Minoan civilization, once remembered mainly through Greek legend and mythology until excavations beginning in 1900, led by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, revealed it to be one of the most advanced societies of the prehistoric world. Evans's reconstructions remain debated among scholars, but they help visitors visualize the palace's original scale and complexity, from the royal living quarters and throne room to the storage magazines and workshop zones.

The original palace was built around 1900 BC, destroyed by an earthquake around 1700 BC and rebuilt on a grander scale. Knossos met its final destruction in the Late Bronze Age, an event many historians connect to the volcanic eruption on Santorini, though the site remained inhabited for some time afterward.

In the afternoon, you drive to nearby Heraklion for a visit to the Archaeological Museum, home to one of the world's most important collections of Minoan art and artifacts drawn from sites across Crete. Displays include idols in terracotta, marble and alabaster, along with gold jewelry, ivory work, figurines, sarcophagi and frescoes that complement what you saw at Knossos.

Following the museum visit, you have free time for lunch (meal not included) and to explore the pedestrian old town of Heraklion before returning to Agios Nikolaos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Archaeological Museum worth it if we've already seen Knossos?
Yes, the museum houses the artifacts actually excavated from Knossos and other Minoan sites, including frescoes, jewelry and pottery, so it adds context you can't get from the ruins alone.
How much free time do we get in Heraklion?
Roughly 2 hours after the museum visit, which is enough time for lunch and a walk through the pedestrian old town.
Is lunch included?
No, but free time is built into the schedule for you to choose a restaurant in Heraklion.
Can this tour accommodate a wheelchair?
No, this particular itinerary does not accommodate wheelchairs.
How does this differ from your Knossos-only tour?
This 8 hour version adds the Archaeological Museum and free time in Heraklion. Our 4 hour Knossos Palace tour (GAGIO-01) covers the site alone for guests with less time.

Also Available:

›Knossos Palace - if you would like to visit Archaeological site of Knossos

What a great time all of us had. Mostly because of our tours with the people you booked us with. I cant say enough about our tours, guides, drivers and vehicles...All of us were impressed with each of them and have already recommended your company to people we know who have upcoming trips to Europe. Plans are being drawn up for our next trip in 2 years..I must admit I was afraid something would go wrong, and being the one in charge of the bookings all of the blame would fall on me if one of the tours didnt show up...Well what a hoot when we got off the boat in all 3 places and there was my name on the bus....Once again thank you for all of your help

Ken Diaz the Group Reservation Manager of Private Shore Trips organized an amazing set of tourstransportation events for our group of 42 friends and family in MULTIPLE countries! Yes Italy, Greece & Turkey!! Or tour guides provided excellent connections with the entire group and gave a dissertation on the history of each location we visited. We had teachers in our group and they were impressed with the tour guides that says a lot!

All of our tours were just fantatic.  In Athens, the Acropolis was simply awesome and we had a wonderful time in the Plaka.  I wish we could have had lunch in one of those roof top bars.  That would have been awesome.  In Katakolon, the farm you recommended was so nice, peaceful and the hosts were so welcoming.  The other tours in Greece were great but those were the highlights for us.  Thank you also for telling the guide to walk slowly - my mother appreciated it.

I want to take the opportunity to thank you for the services you coordinated for my family vacation in Europe. Each individual tour guide and driver were excellent. Their services were exceptional. They were super knowledgeable and friendly with professionalism. I would like to make sure they are recognized by their company for being great! P.S. you were also wonderful! You have great customer service and were always ready to assist us with any questions we may have.
