TOUR DESCRIPTION

Rome Highlights Driving Tour Private Tour

This 4 hour private driving tour is built for first-time visitors to Rome or guests with limited time, covering the city's major landmarks with photo stops along the way.

After meeting your driver guide, your first stop is a vantage point overlooking the ruins of the Roman Forum, once the political, religious, and commercial heart of the empire. A short distance away is the Colosseum, built under Emperor Vespasian starting around 70 AD and completed by his son Titus in 80 AD, and still the most recognizable of the city's ancient monuments. You have time to walk around the exterior of the Colosseum and the neighboring Arch of Constantine for photos.

Your next stop is the Trevi Fountain, where legend holds that tossing a coin into the water over your left shoulder guarantees a return visit to Rome. From here, you make a brief stop at the Spanish Steps, the longest and widest staircase in Europe and a popular spot for people watching.

Next is a short stop at the Pantheon, one of ancient Rome's best preserved buildings. Built as a temple to the gods (the Greek "pan-theon" means "all gods"), it survived largely intact because it was converted into a Christian church in the 7th century.

No visit to Rome is complete without Piazza Navona, a square shaped by several Baroque masterpieces, including Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers. Your final stop covers the highlights of Vatican City from the outside: the symmetry of the Piazza San Pietro and the scale of St. Peter's Basilica.

At the end of your driving tour, you are brought back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour available for cruise passengers docking at Civitavecchia?
This specific tour is designed for guests staying at a hotel in Rome, with pick up from your hotel or Fiumicino Airport. If you are arriving by cruise ship at Civitavecchia, ask us about our separate Civitavecchia shore excursions with port pick-up and Back-to-Ship Guarantee.
Do we go inside any of the sites on this tour?
No, this is a driving tour with stops for photos at each landmark. If you would like to go inside the Coliseum, the Vatican Museums, or St. Peter's Basilica, our Ancient Rome, Highlights of Vatican City, or Best of Rome tours include those interior visits.
Why is the Trevi Fountain coin toss considered lucky?
The tradition holds that tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain over your left shoulder with your right hand guarantees a return trip to Rome. The custom was popularized internationally by the 1954 film Three Coins in the Fountain, and the city collects roughly 1.5 million euros in coins from the fountain each year, which is donated to an Italian charity that runs a supermarket for those in need.
What is the origin of the Pantheon's name and design?
The Pantheon was built as a temple to all the Roman gods, its name coming from the Greek "pan" (all) and "theos" (god). The current building was constructed under Emperor Hadrian around 126 AD and features the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, still standing after nearly 1,900 years. It survived largely intact because it was converted into a Christian church in the 7th century.

I cant thank you enough for the excellent service. The private tours you arranged far exceeded any expectations. When we walked off the ship and saw our drivers waiting we all felt like Royalty. They made wonderful recommendations regarding our itineraries. The vans were absolutely immaculate. They always opened our doors and assisted us in and out of the vehicle. They were so knowledgeable about their destinations.  I cant wait to contact some of my clients who are planning European cruises for next season and together with you planning their private tours

Thank you so much. We enjoyed the guides you provided for us. We have ALREADY mentioned your company to others. I hope we were gracious enough for your people. We were a bit unsure what to tip and hope the guides were satisfied with what we did give. I really appreciate your attention to detail with our tours and we were extremely happy. Thank you.

We had a fantastic experience with our driver and guide Luca on a private tour of Rome. Luca was friendly, informative and made the most of our short time in Rome. The entire family enjoyed him. Weve been on many private tours and Luca was the best we can ever remember. We highly recommend him.
