About Istanbul Cruise Port

Istanbul has one of the most unusual cruise terminals in the world. The terminal at Galataport is underground, so you do not step out onto a pier.

How the Port Is Laid Out

  • Galataport Istanbul is in Karakoy, on the European side of the Bosphorus. Most cruise ships dock here, alongside the quay.
  • The passenger terminal is underground. After you leave your ship, passport control and luggage handling take place below ground.
  • From the terminal, follow the signs to the elevators marked EXIT, which take you up to the waterfront promenade above ground.
  • Galataport can handle up to three ships a day, and passport control can take longer when several ships are in port.

Distance to the City

  • Sultanahmet and the historic area are about 2 miles (3.5km) from the terminal, roughly 15 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic.
  • The Galata Bridge is about a 10 minute walk from the terminal exit, and Istiklal Street leads up to Taksim.
  • Walking to Sultanahmet takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes, so most guests use a vehicle or the tram.

Getting to the Historic Area

  • A taxi from the terminal to Sultanahmet takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes. Use the meter or agree on the price before you get in.
  • The T1 tram runs from the Tophane stop, a short walk from the terminal, toward Sultanahmet. You will need an Istanbulkart, sold at kiosks and machines near the stop.

Other Transportation Options in Istanbul

A private transfer is not the only way to get between the port and the city. Here is what a taxi, the tram and walking look like. None of these are services we operate or book.

Taxi

  • Taxis wait outside the terminal. The ride to the historic area takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Ask the driver to use the meter, or agree on the total price before you get in.

T1 Tram

  • The T1 tram line runs from the Tophane stop, a short walk from the terminal, toward Sultanahmet and the historic area.
  • You need an Istanbulkart, which you can buy at kiosks and machines near the stop. Plan on carrying your own luggage.

Walking

  • The Galata Bridge is about a 10 minute walk from the terminal exit, and Dolmabahce Palace is about 20 to 25 minutes on foot along the waterfront.
  • Sultanahmet is roughly 40 to 50 minutes on foot, which is a long walk for most cruise guests on a short port day.

A private transfer costs more than these options, but it is the only one that meets you above ground at the terminal on a schedule built around your sailing, drives straight to your Istanbul hotel or Istanbul Airport, and is backed by our back-to-ship guarantee.

About Istanbul and the Surrounding Area

Istanbul is a huge city, but its main historic sights are close together on the historic peninsula, just across the Golden Horn from the cruise terminal.

Highlights Many Cruise Passengers Visit

  • Hagia Sophia.
  • The Blue Mosque.
  • Topkapi Palace.
  • The Basilica Cistern.
  • The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar.
  • Galata Tower and the Karakoy and Galata neighborhoods.
  • A Bosphorus waterfront or ferry view of the city.

Planning Your Time

  • The historic area is about 15 to 30 minutes by car from the terminal, so a full port day works well, but check your ship's all aboard time before you plan your day.
  • Many major sights sit close together in Sultanahmet, so a private driver-guide can cover a lot in a few hours.
  • Check opening hours and visitor rules for mosques and palaces before you go, since they can change.
  • Istanbul traffic can be heavy, so build extra time into your plan, especially on the way back to the ship.

Airport

  • Istanbul Airport (IST) is up to 1 hour and 15 minutes from the cruise terminal by private vehicle, depending on traffic.
