This full day tour from Leith visits St. Andrews, known as the home of golf and Scotland's oldest university, including the town's Cathedral and Castle, with free time for lunch and shopping.
After meeting your private guide at the pier, you depart for St. Andrews with a short stop to see the 19th century Forth Rail Bridge, a cantilever engineering marvel carrying the North British Railway a mile and a half across the Firth of Forth at 150 feet above high tide.
The ruins of St Andrews Castle, seat of the town's Archbishops, date back to the 13th century. Notable features include the dungeon and the mines tunneled during the siege that followed the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546, among the finest siege works of their kind in Europe. A visitor center exhibition brings the history of the castle and cathedral to life.
You also visit the remains of St Andrews Cathedral, once the largest in Scotland, with particularly well preserved precinct walls. The Cathedral Museum holds an outstanding collection of medieval sculpture, including the St Andrews Sarcophagus. St Rule's Tower, part of the original 12th century Augustinian church, offers splendid views from the top.
Following these visits, you have free time for lunch in a typical Scottish pub, along with time to explore the town or shop, including views of the Old Course, the most famous course in golf.
Later in the afternoon you return to the port along the coast, passing the East Neuk fishing villages of Crail, Pittenweem, and Anstruther.
