This pedestrian area is one of the finest architectural ensembles in the world and is home to the buildings that have made Pisa famous: the Leaning Tower, the Duomo, the Baptistery, and the burial grounds of the Camposanto. The Cathedral of Pisa is a Romanesque masterpiece dating back to the 11th century, built to serve the wealthy mercantile traders of Pisa. At the time the surrounding area was mostly open space, with no bell tower or baptistery yet standing. About 20 years later, construction of the Baptistery began, with the architect designing it to complement the cathedral by repeating the narrow arches and intricate columns seen on the cathedral facade. Another 20 years after that, construction began on the Tower of Pisa. Construction took almost 200 years because the tilt became evident early on, and work stopped repeatedly until a plan to correct it could be devised. Today it is that same tilt that draws visitors from around the world. While you are here, you have time to take in these sites and enjoy a drink in a cafe or a typical Italian ice cream.
