This private shore excursion from Greenock explores Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Scotland's first national park, then continues into Glasgow for a short cathedral visit before returning to the ship.
After meeting your driver-guide at the pier, you head north toward Loch Lomond, about 30 miles (48km) from Greenock. Loch Lomond has the largest surface area of any freshwater loch in the United Kingdom, stretching 24 miles (39km) in length and up to 5 miles (8km) across, with a maximum depth of roughly 600 feet (183m) and around 30 islands. You stop in Luss, a lochside village of stone cottages, for photographs and views across the water.
The route continues through the Trossachs to Aberfoyle, where a former woolen mill building dating to 1758 now houses a shop selling Scottish knitwear, and where a working sheepdog demonstration is included. In Callander you meet three Highland cows and can offer them carrots, followed by a complimentary whisky tasting.
A highlight of the day is Doune Castle, a 14th century courtyard castle built for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and later used as a filming location for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlander, and Game of Thrones. Included in the tour is lunch with a drink at a local pub popular with residents, where you can choose from Scottish specialties such as steak pie or fish and chips.
On the return drive to Greenock, you pass through Glasgow for a short driving tour that includes Glasgow Cathedral, a medieval church dating largely to the 13th century. The tour then returns you to the pier in Greenock.
