This Gdynia old town excursion visits Gdansk, which traces its origins to the 9th century and has long been known as the Pearl of the North. In addition to a walking tour, you visit the interiors of the Gothic Town Hall and St. Mary's Church, one of the three largest brick churches ever built.

Gdansk's Old Town

Gdansk was an important Baltic Sea port from its earliest years and became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1361. The city's Golden Age ran from the 15th through the 18th centuries. Gdansk was reduced to rubble during World War II but has since been rebuilt to its historic appearance from the era of its wealthy ship merchants.

After meeting your guide, you drive to Gdansk's old town, which is largely a pedestrian zone, so most of your time is spent on foot. With a private tour, you can control the pace and stop for a coffee break if needed.

You stroll along Dluga Street, the main thoroughfare, stopping at the Golden Gate, a 17th century entry gate built in the Renaissance style, and the Neptune Fountain, whose bronze statue was cast between 1612 and 1615 and formally unveiled in 1633, symbolizing the city's link to the sea.

The Town Hall, Artus Court and St. Mary's Church

You visit the interior of the Gothic red brick Town Hall, dating from the 14th century, including its Red Room, originally used for town council meetings and notable for its gilded background, sculptures and paintings. You also see the Artus Court, the city's former Merchant Guild hall and Poland's Stock Exchange, with some windows the height of nearby three story buildings; the building survived the war undamaged.

The tour concludes with a visit to St. Mary's Church, one of the three largest brick churches ever constructed, alongside San Petronio in Bologna and the Frauenkirche in Munich, able to hold 25,000 people. Built in the Gothic period between 1379 and 1502, it contains Gothic altars, one of the world's largest medieval clocks, and Hans Memling's The Last Judgment. At the end of the tour, you are driven back to the pier.
