Gdansk traces its origins to the 9th century and rose to prominence as one of the most important ports on the Baltic Sea. The city joined the Hanseatic League in 1361 and reached its Golden Age between the 15th and 18th centuries, when wealthy merchant families built the ornate townhouses and public buildings that still define the old town today. Gdansk was largely destroyed during World War II but has been meticulously rebuilt to its pre-war appearance.
Your walking tour begins on Dluga Street, the main thoroughfare of the old town and a largely pedestrian zone. You pass the Golden Gate, a 17th century entry arch built in the Renaissance style that marks the western entrance to the Long Market. At the center of the street stands the Neptune Fountain, cast in 1613 and long a symbol of the city's historic connection to the sea.
You visit the interior of the Gothic Town Hall, a red brick building dating from the 14th century. The highlight is the Red Room, originally the chamber for town council meetings, decorated with gilded walls, sculptures, and paintings from the city's merchant era. Nearby, the Artus Court served as Gdansk's Merchant Guild hall and later as Poland's Stock Exchange. The building survived the war intact and retains its original scale, with windows that rise to the height of neighboring three-story buildings.
The tour concludes with a visit to St. Mary's Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world, with a capacity of 25,000 people. Built in the Gothic style, the church contains a series of Gothic altars, one of the world's largest surviving medieval astronomical clocks, and Hans Memling's altarpiece The Last Judgment. After the church visit, your guide returns you to the pier.
