Official Website Most Popular Tours from Livorno - Tuscany Tours & ExcursionsFrequently Asked QuestionsWhere are we dropped off and picked up in Florence? Your driver drops you off and picks you up at the same spot on Lungarno della Zecca, in central Florence near the Ponte Vecchio Bridge. From there you can walk to the Duomo, Santa Croce Church, and the Boboli Gardens. Why is the Ponte Vecchio the only bridge in Florence to survive World War II? The Ponte Vecchio was built in 1345 after a flood destroyed its predecessor. When retreating German forces demolished every other bridge over the Arno in August 1944, the Ponte Vecchio was spared, reportedly on Hitler's direct order. The bridge has housed goldsmiths and jewelers since 1593, when Grand Duke Ferdinand I de Medici ordered the butchers and tanners who originally worked there to be replaced. What are the Baptistry's famous bronze doors, and why are they called the Gates of Paradise? The east doors of Florence's Baptistery were created by sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti, who spent 27 years modeling, casting, and gilding the bronze reliefs before they were installed in 1452. Michelangelo is said to have called them so beautiful that they were fit to be the Gates of Paradise, and the name has stuck ever since. The originals are now preserved at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, with cast replicas standing in their place at the Baptistery.
