Alicante Shore Excursion - This half day tour visits the Castle of Santa Barbara, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and the Monastery of Santa Faz plus time to explore the old town of Alicante.

After meeting your guide at the pier you immediately depart up Benacantil Hill. The Castle of Santa Barbara occupies the entire summit and large portions of the mountain's slope, dominating the city below. It is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and dates back to the 16th century. From its battlements you will enjoy spectacular views over the city, the coastline and the surrounding farmland.

After visiting the castle you enjoy a stop at the Monastery of Santa Faz which was built in the baroque style with a pyramid shaped dome. Inside the monastery you'll see a relic bought from the Vatican in the 15th century. Tradition says that this piece of cloth was used by Christ to dry his bloodied face during the Stations of the Cross.

Later you enjoy a tour through the charming old quarter which is nestled at the foot of the imposing castle. It is a maze of small streets climbing up the hill. Many of the streets are lined with multicolored buildings and interesting balconies. You will see the impressive 18th century baroque Town Hall, where your guide will provide you with details of its imposing exterior. You visit the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas which is named for the city's patron saint. Inside you discover the magnificent 17th century nave and the lovely 15th century cloister. The Cathedral de San Nicolas was built between 1616 and 1662 and stands over 130 feet tall. If you prefer, it is possible to visit the unique small Synagogue of Alicante, just let us know.

Near the end of your tour you visit the beautiful palm lined Esplanade of Spain where you can sample the delicious local specialty called Horchata. This sweetened milk of crushed tiger nuts was first introduced to Alicante by the Moors. A short amount of free time is available before returning to the ship.
