Lisbon Shore Excursion

This Lisbon shore trip sees many of Lisbon's Highlights as you travel on an historic tram, reckoning a bygone era. Following the tram tour of the city, you enjoy a short stop to taste some port wine before visiting the interiors of Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery.

After meeting your guide, you drive a short distance to the Estrela Square where the local trams begin. Sit back and enjoy a relaxing tram ride through this metropolis built on seven hills. Taking a tram in Lisbon is a key experience, much like a cable car ride in San Francisco.

After the tram ride you enjoy a short stop to taste a glass of local port wine and a typical Portuguese custard pastry, called the Pastel de Belem.

Next you drive to the Belem area which is famous for its landmarks dedicated to the marine discoverers. The area includes parks, gardens and monuments that are all well worth a visit. Your first stop is the Belem Tower, a UNESCO Heritage site and symbol of Lisbon. This fortified tower is where the explorer Vasco da Gama set sail on his voyage of discovery to India. While most tours only include a photo stop here, this tour includes an interior visit of the tower. During your visit you will learn about it's history and enjoy panoramic views of Lisbon.

Also in the Belem area you see the Monument of the Discoveries, which was constructed to honor the marine explorers, and to celebrate the 500 year anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.

Your final stop is at the imposing Jeronimos Monastery. This cathedral complex was built during the reign of King D. Manuel I, as was the Belem Tower. The small chapel inside is where Vasco da Gama spent the night praying before he left on his route of discoveries. The riches brought back from these discoveries paid for this glorious monument, which today is also a listed world heritage site.
