Juneau Shore Excursion

This four hour Juneau shore trip includes along a Rainforest Trail and a visit to the local Salmon Hatchery. You also enjoy a tour of downtown Juneau and Douglas Island.

After meeting your guide at the port, you set off through Juneau's historic district where you will see the Capitol Building and Governor's Mansion while you learn tales of past and present Juneau. Next you drive to the northern end of Douglas Island until you reach the Rainforest Trailhead.

The Rainforest Trail is a gentle loop that meanders through forest, wetland, and meadows and then out to a pristine beach. You will enjoy majestic views of the Chilkat Range and isle dotted waterways which bring you a sense of calm.

As you walk the trail, your naturalist-guide will help you search for signs of animals and watch for wildlife. A treat for many is the possibility of seeing a bald eagle nest or one of Alaska's songbirds. As you stroll the forest path you will also see a bounty of both intriguing and beautiful coastal plants, most of which can be used as food or medicine. In ancient times the land was a food pantry as well as medicine chest.

Your guide will share lore and traditions from the Tlingit Indians as you experience this place, learn its wisdom, and hear what it means to the local people.

Later you visit a local Salmon Hatchery where you enjoy a behind the scenes VIP tour of the unique facility where you learn about the lifecycle of one of Alaska’s most precious resources. See-through fish ladders, visible holding tanks, saltwater aquariums and touch tanks allow you to see the various stages of salmon development as well as other interesting animals that call the Inside Passage home.

At the end of your Juneau shore excursion you return to the pier.
